August 6th marks the anniversary of the 1777 Battle of Oriskany. Fought as an American relief column marched to aid the besieged Fort Stanwix, about 800 Tryon County militiamen and 60 allied Oneida warriors under Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer were ambushed by British, Loyalist, and Indigenous forces (including Mohawk and Seneca warriors). Knox Artillery Train Cannon Relay Set for December
More than 75 people gathered Sunday at Prospect Hill Cemetery in the Village of Victory, Saratoga County, — just steps from the site of British Gen. John Burgoyne’s 1777 surrender—to commemorate four Revolutionary War anniversaries and rededicate a cornerstone of American memory.
The event, hosted by Saratoga 250, featured the dedication of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts Knox Artillery Cannon, the 248th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga, the 250th anniversary of Gen. Albany’s Peter Gansevoort, “The Hero of Stanwix”
Peter Gansevoort Jr. was born into the Dutch aristocracy of Albany to Harman Gansevoort (1712–1801) and Magdalena Douw (1718–1796). His younger brother Leonard Gansevoort, was politically active, serving in the state assembly and senate, as well as the Continental Congress.
Gansevoort is also remembered today as the grandfather of author Herman Melville.

Cohoes Delaware Avenue Heritage Corridor History Event
The mile-and-a-half Delaware Avenue Heritage Corridor connects Green Island with Waterford, proceeds through Cohoes and north to Peebles Island State Park. The Corridor includes the Van Schaick Mansion, Matton Shipyard and Peebles Island State Park and follows the Delaware Avenue Trail portion of the State-wide Empire State Trail.
