Central Park Statue Redesigned To Include Sojouner Truth

The Monumental Women’s Statue Fund announced a redesigned statue to honor pioneering women’s rights advocates – the first statue depicting real women in the 165-year history of New York City’s Central Park.

The redesign comes on the heals of criticism that the original design excluded the contributions of people of color.

The amended design, which still includes Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but now adds Sojourner Truth, is expected to be released on Women’s Equality Day, August 26th. [Read more…] about Central Park Statue Redesigned To Include Sojouner Truth

Proposals Sought For New York State History Conference

This November the annual Researching New York Conference will bring together historians, archivists, public historians, graduate students, museum curators, teachers, documentarians, and more to share their work on New York State history.

Conference organizers invite proposals from any time period and any methodological perspective on all aspects of New York State’s history.

2017 is a year of celebration of women suffrage in New York State. Groups throughout New York are marking the occasion with lectures, exhibits, conferences, and a wide range of programs commemorating the milestone. For Researching New York 2017, proposals that enlarge and expand that exploration by also considering the lives, work, and history of women in New York from the earliest native Americans to the present, are strongly recommended. #NY4Suffrage Celebrates New York Suffrage Centennial

suffrage photoHumanities New York has announced the launch of “#NY4Suffrage: Selfies, Stories & Suffragists Live” a campaign to connect New Yorkers to the diverse people, places, and ideas that started in their own backyards and sparked a national movement for women’s right to vote.

November 6, 2017 marks the centennial of women securing the right to vote in New York State.  To commemorate this transformative moment in American democracy Humanities New York is featuring the legacy of women’s suffrage in communities statewide with a social media campaign starting Centennial Weekend, July 29-30, 2017 through Election Day, November 7, 2017. Suffrage Centennial: Erie Canal VoteTilla Launches

votetillaVoteTilla set out from Seneca Falls on July 17 at 10 am, traveling the Erie Canal towards its first landing at Clyde, NY at 3:45 pm.

Woodstock Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial

woodstock women voting 1918Gathering Woodstock Women: A Celebration of the New York State Women’s Suffrage Centennial, the first major exhibit recognizing many remarkable women from Woodstock’s past, opens at the Historical Society of Woodstock’s Eames House Museum on Friday, June 16 with a reception from 7 to 9 pm.

On Saturday, June 17 at noon, at the Eames House, Town historian Richard Heppner and Janine Fallon-Mower, co-authors of Legendary Locals of Woodstock, will speak on The Varying Roles of Women Throughout Woodstock History. The Museum is located at 20 Comeau Drive, Woodstock. Admission is free.

2017 Women’s History Programs in Peterboro

Call for Papers: Women in New Netherland

New Netherland InstituteThe year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State. The New Netherland Institute is aiming to use this centenary and their Annual Conference to highlight the role of women in the development of the seventeenth-century Dutch colony of New Netherland and early New York.

Tompkins Co Legislature Recognizes Suffrage Centennial

VoteTilla Flotilla To Mark Suffrage Centennial
