Women on a Wheel: History Talk and Bike Ride

Women on a Wheel eventOn Sunday, August 26 at 10 am, historian Kjirsten Gustavson is set to present “Women on a Wheel” at Staatsburgh State Historic Site. The program will combine history, costumed interpretation, and a short bike ride through the hamlet of Staatsburg, which surrounds the Gilded Age mansion on the Hudson River.

In the 19th Century, the bicycle took the world by storm, and in the process, transformed women’s lives. Suddenly, they were more athletic, more mobile and… in need of bloomers. Susan B. Anthony once said of the bicycle, “I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. Gilded Age Interactive Audience Tour in Dutchess County

Staatsburgh State Historic Site Audience Participation castStaatsburgh State Historic Site’s “Gilded Age Experience Deluxe Audience Participation Tour,” on Sunday, June 24th (at 1 pm), lets visitors participate in activities that took place in the mansion 100 years ago.

A cast of costumed interpreters who portray guests and servants of Staatsburgh’s turn-of-the-century owners, Ruth and Ogden Mills, who resided at Staatsburgh — their country estate on the Hudson River — each autumn, hosting lavish weekend parties for America’s wealthiest and most elite society.

Visitors will be announced by the butler, and then meet Staatsburgh’s guests and servants. As they tour the house, visitors will calm the flustered chambermaid, assist the footman with the formal dining room table settings, and try out their skill as a lady’s maid or valet. WWI Themed Tour At Staatsburgh State Historic Site

WWI Reenactors at Staatsburgh SHSTo commemorate the centennial year of the ending or World War I, Staatsburgh State Historic Site will offer a tour, “World War I and the End of the Gilded Age” on Saturday, February 24 at 1 pm.

Susan Goodier ‘Women Will Vote!’ Talk at Staatsburgh

women will vote book coverIn celebration of the centenary of New York women obtaining the right to vote, Staatsburgh State Historic Site will host a book talk and signing by Susan Goodier, co-author of, Women Will Vote! Winning Suffrage in New York State, recently released by Cornell University Press, on Saturday, October 28th.

Staatsburgh was the home of prominent social hostess Ruth Livingston Mills and her husband, financer Ogden Mills. Recent evidence has come to light suggesting that Ruth Mills supported the suffrage cause. The 79-room mansion on the Hudson River showcases the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the wealthy elite of the early 20th century. The Gilded Age Experience at staatsburghThe  Staatsburgh State Historic Site, in Dutchess County, NY, will host a Gilded Age tour on October 1st at 1 pm.

This tour at Staatsburgh will have visitors participate in activities that took place at the mansion 100 years ago. The “Deluxe Participation Tour” will feature a cast of costumed interpreters who will portray guests and servants of Staatsburgh’s turn-of-the-century owners, Ruth and Ogden Mills. Visitors can partake in activities like hiring a maid, deciding the menu for the dinner party and taking an etiquette quiz. WWI Centennial Themed Tour, Reenactor at Staatsburgh Saturday

ww1 reenactorTo mark the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I in April 1917, Staatsburgh State Historic Site will offer a theme tour, “World War I & the End of the Gilded Age.” The 90-minute tour, led by an interpreter in period clothing, is offered on Saturday, April 8, at 1 pm.

The site also has on view an exhibit focusing on Ogden Livingston Mills, son of Staatsburgh’s residents, Ruth and Ogden Mills, who chose a life of public service, including service in the Great War. Focusing on his wartime activities and political career, the exhibit also features a silver tray given to his parents, Ruth and Ogden Mills, by General Pershing, to thank them for billeting American officers in their Paris home during the war. Special Downton Abbey Tours at Staatsburgh

image003Fans of the popular PBS television series can enjoy a “Downton Abbey experience” at Staatsburgh State Historic Site (also known as Mills Mansion) this fall.

The site will present two different tours that compare Staatsburgh to Downton Abbey. Staatsburgh, the turn-of-the-century home of socialite Ruth Livingston Mills and her husband, industrialist Ogden Mills, was a real-life American version of the British drama. StaatsburghDowntonTour6-2014 (153)In the study of history, a personal connection is often what draws us in to begin to explore a subject, place, or era.  We might be interested in World War II after hearing grandpa’s war stories.  We might begin to read about the Underground Railroad after discovering stations in our hometown.

Making a personal connection with the people we read about and study is a common impulse for history lovers.  It helps make history come alive. This story isn’t about an ancestor, or a history connection to my home town, it’s about a woman with a more unique connection to me, one who shares my name.
