Effort to Sanction SS United States Preservation Attorney Fails

A U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Federal Court for the Northern District of Florida has rejected a motion by attorneys for Okaloosa County Florida seeking to sanction James Maloney, Esq., counsel for the New York Coalition to Save the SS United States.

The County had attempted to penalize Maloney for filing the Coalition’s lawsuit aimed at preventing the destruction of the historic ocean liner. The Court’s decision makes clear that the case was not frivolous, but rather a legitimate legal effort to protect the historic ship from being sunk off the Florida Coast. NYC Council Supports Effort to Save Historic SS United States

A last-ditch effort to save the historic ocean liner SS United States from being sunk as an artificial reef off the coast of Florida got a boost last week when the the New York City Council unanimously passed Councilwoman Gale Brewer’s resolution calling on the federal government to prevent the sinking. SS United States Hearing Set for Thursday in NYC

A last ditch effort of the New York Coalition to Save the SS United States to prevent the historic ocean liner from being sunk off the coast of Florida is continuing.

Once upon a time, the United States was a can-do country. In 2025, we are celebrating the bicentennial of the completion of the Erie Canal begun in 1817 in Rome, New York. The Marquis de Lafayette in his return trip to the United States in 1824-1825 actually traveled portions of the Erie Canal in June 1825. The American Friends of Lafayette will be celebrating that journey from Niagara Falls to Albany next month.

The completion of the Erie Canal launched an extended period of achievements eventually culminating in the landing on the moon. The opening of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, at the eastern end of the Erie Canal was one spinoff of the construction. The top engineers were drawn to the building of the Canal.

An Update on Efforts to Save the SS United States

The effort to save the historic steamship SS United States continues. The New York Coalition to Save the SS United States has written to Okaloosa County, Florida, and President Donald Trump, who said in his speech to Congress on March 2nd that he would “create a new Office of Shipbuilding in the White House,” to request that sinking of the ship as an artificial reef off the coast of Florida be reconsidered.

Okaloosa County has so far rejected the request and President Trump has not responded. On February 19, after months of delay, the ship was moved by tow to a shipyard in Mobile, Alabama to prepare for its sinking; it arrived there on March 2nd.

Historic Ocean Liner SS United States Closer to Being Sunk

Okaloosa County’s Tourist Development Department, Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida, says it has completed the necessary safety requirements by local, state and federal agencies to move the SS United States from Philadelphia to a docking area in Mobile, Alabama where preparations to to sink the historic ocean liner off Florida are expected to continue. Coalition Hopes To Bring Historic Ship to NYC

The battle to save the SS United States, one of America’s most historic ships, which spent most of its career traveling between New York City and Southampton, England, continues. The SS United States Conservancy transferred ownership of the SS United States to Okaloosa County, Florida in order to convert the ship into the world’s largest artificial reef.

Historic Ocean Liner SS United States Faces Eviction

After a lengthy legal dispute over rent, the US District Court in Philadelphia ruled on June 14, that the SS United States must vacate the berth at Pier 82 in Philadelphia, which she has occupied for decades, by September 12, 2024.

In her ruling, Senior Judge Anita Brody determined that the ship’s landlord, Penn Warehousing, could not double dockage fees without notice to force the ship from her pier.
