On October 26, Buffalo Maritime Center’s replica of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief, built by over 200 volunteers over five years, pulled into Pier 26 at Hudson River Park.

The Buffalo Maritime Center will be launching the full-scale operational traditionally-built plank-on-frame replica of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief, which opened the Erie Canal in 1825. Completed after four years of construction, the 73-foot long, 44 ton vessel will be launched at Canalside (Erie Canal Harbor), the recreation of the western terminus of the Erie Canal. The canal boat Seneca Chief was built in 1825 in anticipation of the completion of the Erie Canal‘s western section.

The Champlain Canal turns 200 this year and the Erie Canal will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2025.
The Champlain Canal between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain at Whitehall was the first to open. Worked started on the Champlain Canal in October, 1816. The first boats operated in November, 1819, and was fully completed in 1823, two years before the Erie Canal was finished.
