Mohawk Valley Transportation History at Schoharie Crossing

West Bound on Mohawk RiverSchoharie Crossing State Historic Site is set to conduct its fifth annual Tuesday Talk series to recognize New York State History Month this November. Each week a speaker presents on regional or New York State history.

Historian Scott Haefner will discuss Transportation in the Mohawk Valley on November 12th. This presentation will explore the significance of the river valley in developing transportation to the West and covers the Bateaux era in the 18th century through Turnpikes, Canals and Railroads. Haefner is a Registered Public Historian and is the site manager of Old Fort Johnson, operated by the Montgomery County Historical Society. Each week a speaker will present on regional or New York State history. All presentations are free and open to the public, and will begin at 6:30 pm in the Enders House adjacent to the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center, 129 Schoharie Street, Fort Hunter. Seneca Lake Shipwrecks Program Planned

Seneca Lake from Watkins GlenArthur B. Cohn is set to present “What Lies Beneath: Stories from Seneca Lake” at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm.

The talk will focus on the first two seasons of the Seneca Lake survey and the significant shipwreck discoveries that will add to the understanding of the canal era when horses and mules walked the towpath.  Cohn will also outline the history of the Seneca Lake region and, based on his four decades of Lake Champlain experience, the logical expectation that shipwrecks would be present. NYS Beer History Program at Schoharie Crossing

upper hudson valley beerBeer historian Craig Gravina is set to speak on the history of beer brewing in New York State on August 27 at 6:30 pm, at the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site.

Gravina will talk about the history of the brewing industry in the Hudson Valley and include its close connection with the Mohawk Valley, including the Erie Canal and grain production in the valley and as well as other interesting personalities and events. Canal Day at Schoharie Crossing

schoharie crossing canal daysThe annual Canal Day event at Schoharie Crossing has been set for Saturday, July 6 from 11 am to 4 pm.

This year the festival is being held in conjunction with the Tri-County Old Power Associates Engine Show as well as the Metis Nation St. Kateri PowWow. Steps Taken to Preserve Schoharie Aqueduct

Schoharie AqueductOpened in 1841 to carry canal boats over the Schoharie Creek, Schoharie Aqueduct was one of the major aqueducts of the enlarged Erie Canal. This impressive structure is a centerpiece of the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter. This series invites local musicians to spend an evening on the historic Putman Canal Store porch. Geology of the Erie Canal Program at Schoharie Crossing

The Friends of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site are set to welcome Thomas Grasso to discuss the bedrock and ice age geologic history of the region, and how this long and complex natural history affected human history by controlling the route of the canal and the obstacles that had to be overcome.
