‘An Evening with Solomon Northup’ in Saratoga

Clifford Oliver Mealy as Solomon NorthupBorn in 1808, Solomon Northup was an African American abolitionist and musician who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841, while living with his family in Saratoga Springs. With the help of friends, Northup was rescued in 1853 and his story and experiences were the subject of his book, 12 Years a Slave, which was made into a movie in 2013. Saratoga Springs Train Stations: Their Architecture & Impact

D&H Depot Saratoga Springs History Museum_George S Bolster ...Throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s, Saratoga Springs was a premiere travel destination and the D&H Railway Station would be a hub of activity welcoming tourists, business people, and college students.

One station that remains is located at 117 Grand Avenue. It was originally the Adirondack Company Railway office and station and later became part of the D&H Railway’s Adirondack branch. The Foundation preserved the building and used it as its office for many years. (Read more about it here.)

Mail-Order Kit Houses of Saratoga Tour Sunday

168 East AvenueThe Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation will continue their Sunday Stroll series on Sunday, October 3rd at 10:30 am with “Mail-Order Houses of Saratoga.”

Madison C. Squires will lead this tour of houses on East and Pinewood avenues, which highlights the “Kit House” era – a time when the average person could put a check through the mail, and order and receive an entire house. Saratoga’s Spencer Trask Memorial Being Restored After Vandalism
