Cliffs Host Varied Flora and Fauna

Searchers look for the body of a man from Brooklyn in the karst below a cliff at Mohonk Preserve in February 2023On a recent hike up Eagle Mountain in Milton, Vermont, we climbed to a ledge overlooking Lake Champlain. Turkey vultures soared overhead, tilting back and forth on the breeze. A sheer cliff dropped to the forest below us, a lush variety of plants clinging to its face. Cliffs are defined as areas of exposed bedrock with a slope greater than 60 degrees. We tend to think of cliffs as solely geological features. New State Land Purchase In Warren County Includes Climbing Access

Huckleberry Mountain courtesy Open Space InstituteNew York State has acquired 1,263 acres of land in the Warren County town of Johnsburg in the Southern Adirondacks. The parcel includes Huckleberry Mountain, an elongated peak that tops 2,400 feet, with spectacular cliffs on the ridge’s south and southwest face. The parcel is now part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and is expected to become part of the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest.

In 1911 Huckleberry Mountain was proposed as a site for a massive dam.

Rock Climbers Ticketed For Violating Falcon Closures

View of Poke O MoonshineDEC Forest Ranger Sarah Bode cited two rock climbers April 11 for climbing on routes at Poke O Moonshine that are temporarily closed to protect peregrine falcon nesting sites.

Bode issued tickets for Failure to Obey a DEC sign, returnable in the Town of Keeseville. The tickets were written to a 31-year-old man from Bernardsville, New Jersey, and a 32-year-old woman from New York City. [Read more…] about Rock Climbers Ticketed For Violating Falcon Closures
