Old Stone Fort Museum Names New Director

Melinda McTaggart stands outside the Old Stone Fort MuseumThe Old Stone Fort Museum and Schoharie County Historical Society Board of Trustees has announced the selection of Melinda McTaggart as the new business manager and museum director.

Ms. McTaggart officially took the helm of the museum on October 7th, filling a position which was vacated by the retirement of long-time director Carle Kopecky in November of 2018 and filled by temporary acting director and museum curator Daniel Beams through the first part of 2019. Catstock: Peace, Love and Whiskers at Old Stone Fort

catstock logoThe Schoharie County Historical Society and the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley (ASSV) have announced a celebration of all things cats, Catstock, a day of peace, love and whiskers, set for Saturday, August 24th from 10 am to dusk at the Old Stone Fort Museum in Schoharie.

Held on the heels of the 50th Anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, Catstock 2019 will feature live performances by area bands throughout the day, plus food vendors, local artisans, informational booths, purveyors of cat and pet themed items, face painting, children’s games and activities, raffles and more. A Benedict Arnold Letter That Changed History

Engraving of Benedict Arnold by HB HallOn October 9th, 1777, Nathaniel Bacheller, a militia adjutant from New Hampshire, wrote a letter to his wife, Suzanna. It was discovered by historians when it appeared on the auction site eBay this past winter and was sold to an unknown buyer for $2,925. A digital copy was downloaded and a transcript of the letter was made before it went to join the buyer’s private collection.

What the letter holds is a first-hand, historically unbiased account of the conversations, command decisions and field actions of General Horatio Gates and General Benedict Arnold during the ongoing 1777 Battle of Saratoga. [Read more…] about A Benedict Arnold Letter That Changed History

Civil War Signal Corps Diary Talk at Old Stone Fort

old stone fort museumSchoharie County Historian Ted Shuart is set to tell the story and share the personal diary of Civil War United States Army Signal Corps 2nd Lieutenant William H. Hill on Thursday, August 8 at 7 pm at the Old Stone Fort Museum in Schoharie, NY.

Lost and forgotten for decades, the diary was discovered and purchased during a general store’s going out of business sale in the town of Richmondville nearly 60 years ago. What it holds is a faithful record of the daily experiences and personal observations of one member of a very small and little known segment of the armed services.
