NYS History Month Moved to October

December 16, 2019 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation (S.5369/A.6462) changing New York State history month from November to October.

“New York has deep historical roots and a cultural uniqueness, and history month is a great time to explore them,” Governor Cuomo said in a n announcement sent to the press. “Given that many historic sites and cultural organizations are closed in November, it makes sense to designate October as our state’s history month – giving people more opportunities to experience and learn about New York’s contributions to our nation’s progress and the arts.” [Read more…] about NYS History Month Moved to October

November 5, 2019 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

The New York State Museum, State Library, and State Archives will celebrate New York State History Month in November with a variety of free public programs for children, families and adults. State History Month represents the opportunity for historians, museums and cultural institutions to highlight importance of New York State’s history through public programs, exhibitions and other learning opportunities.

In 1997, the New York State Legislature established November as New York State History Month with the goal “to celebrate the history of New York state and recognize the contributions of state and local historians.” The celebration had been all but abandoned by 2002, but was revived by then State Historian Robert Weible.

NY State History Month: Another View

November 19, 2015 by Peter Feinman Leave a Comment

New York State History MonthNovember is New York State History Month. The goal of this initiative certainly is a worthy one. Naturally as historians, a primary source document such as a press release invites a close reading of the text. That’s what historians do and government publications are not exempt from such scrutiny. The exercise is quite productive and one can learn a lot from doing it.
