Council for the Humanities Rebrands as Humanities New York

humanities-new-yorkTo celebrate their 40th anniversary, the New York Council for the Humanities is updating their brand, look, and name, and are now known as “Humanities New York.”

A new website contains links to programs, grants, and events – which have been changing to keep up with changing communities. The site also features some of the luminaries whose work they have supported through 40 years of leadership in the public humanities. ‘Votes for Women’ Reading, Discussion Program In Canton

alice riggs hunt 1915The New York Council for the Humanities has joined forces with the St. Lawrence County Historical Association to offer “Votes for Women”, a monthly reading and discussion series that runs from September 10th thru December 17th.

At the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, participants will come together over the course of six sessions to discuss a variety of thematically linked texts with Dr. Melissane Parm Schrems, Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of Native American Studies at St. Lawrence University.

Participants in “Votes for Women” will explore the history of the women’s suffrage movement in our state and nation and discuss women’s – and by extension, our society’s – past, present, and future. Humanities Council Awards Grants, Improves Online Process

NY Council for the HumanitiesThe New York Council for the Humanities has awarded its grants for their May, June and July grant rounds. Council grants focus on creativity and experimentation within the public humanities. From exploring the impact of La Marqueta in Harlem to revealing figures lost to history like Josephine Herrick, Council grants fund programs that are hoped to creatively apply the humanities to illuminate the cultural riches of New York State. NYS Women’s Suffrage Commemoration Update

Photo courtesy the National Susan B Anthony Museum & House.In 2017 it will be 100 years since New York State signed woman’s suffrage into law, three years before the US passed the 19th Amendment. This was a milestone for the state and a transformative moment in American democracy.

Thanks to public help last November, Senator Betty Little and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther circulated letters outlining a $3.9M request to support the centennial. This funding would support grants, programs, and statewide events and activities at cultural heritage sites, museums, libraries and other community organizations. Signers from both houses added their support to these letters, but thus far no funding has been included in either the Senate or House budgets. Humanities Council Seeks Advocates for Suffrage Centennial

suffrage logoThe year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State, a milestone for the state and a transformative moment in American democracy.

The New York Council for the Humanities has launched an effort to get the New York State Legislature to appropriately mark New York State Women’s Suffrage Centennial. “We feel that the New York State legislature has the opportunity and fiscal obligation to support the Commemoration,” an e-mail from the Council said. Mellon Awards $500k To NY Humanities Council

UniversityThe Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the New York Council for the Humanities a grant to support and expand their Humanities Centers Initiative to 42 new Public Humanities Fellows over the next three years.

The Humanities Centers Initiative is a collaboration between the Council and seven research universities: New York University, CUNY Graduate Center, Columbia University, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Buffalo, Cornell University, and Syracuse University.
