An American Literary Giant Takes A Hudson River Excursion By Sloop In 1801

March 30, 2023 by Guest Contributor 1 Comment

Lithograph by E. Whitefield of Tivoli, or Upper Red Hook, Landing, Hudson RiverThe following text about a sloop journey up the Hudson River in 1801 was originally published In The Life of Charles Brockden Brown by William Dunlap (Philadelphia 1815). It was transcribed by Hudson River Maritime Museum volunteer researcher George A. Thompson and additionally edited and annotated by John Warren.

Very suddenly conceived the design of voyaging up the Hudson River, as far as Albany. Had heard much of the grandeur of its shores, but never had gone above ten miles from New York. My friend C. having some leisure was willing to adventure for ten days or a fortnight, and I having still more, and being greatly in want of air and exercise, agreed to accompany him. We found a most spacious and well furnished vessel, captain R.—– in which we embarked at sunset this day. The wind propitious [favorable] and the air wonderfully bland [not foul, like the air in New York at this time]. New Windsor Cantonment Celebrating Washington’s Birthday

January 22, 2020 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

Continental Army Soldier Matt Thorenz from WallkillFollowing the capture of British forces by the allied armies of France and America, at Yorktown, Virginia, in the fall of 1781, the Continental Northern Army returned to the Hudson Highlands. The destruction of the principal British army in the field in the South broke England’s will to continue the struggle.

In the fall of 1782, near New Windsor, 7,500 Continental Army soldiers built a city of 600 log huts. Along with some of their family members, they braved the winter and kept a wary eye on the 12,000 British troops in New York City, just 60 miles away. General Gates at Edmonston House, His Former HQ

October 29, 2019 by Editorial Staff 2 Comments

James Edmonston house providedThe home of James Edmonston in New Windsor has stood for over 250 years. Rescued in the 1960s by the National Temple Hill Association, the house by that point was a junkyard showroom filled with old car parts. It is now restored, near the New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site.

When General Horatio Gates was assigned the Edmonston home as winter quarters for 1782-83, he wrote General George Washington: “Your Excellency’s Dog kennel at Mount Vernon, is as good a Quarter as that I am now in.”  Eyeing the larger and far more refined Ellison House, he expected to be billeted at that nearby property. To please Gates, the senior ranking major general in the Continental Army, Quartermaster General Colonel Timothy Pickering had to evict Surgeon General John Cochran from the Ellison house. Angered by his removal, Cochran challenged the beleaguered Pickering to a duel. [Read more…] about General Gates at Edmonston House, His Former HQ
