Russell Shorto: The Dutch-American Perspective

Slowly, their topic of choice becomes an essential part of their identity. Russell Shorto, a renowned writer of narrative history, writes about his own evolution at the intersection of Dutch-American history.

This essay concerns itself with the intersection of Dutch and American history. Previous posts have explored slavery in New Amsterdam, the naming – and renaming – of that city, and John Adams’ role as unofficial ambassador to the Netherlands during the American war of independence. As I pondered the task of contributing to that lineup, and scrolled through a mental list of possible topics, it occurred to me that, as I have lived at the intersection of Dutch and American history for more than twenty years, my own identity, and its evolution over that time, might be a relevant topic. New Netherland Conference On Saturday Will Be Streamed Online

New Netherland InstituteThe New Netherland Institute, in conjunction with the New-York Historical Society, will host  it’s annual conference on Saturday, October 1st.

This year’s conference, “Alida Livingston’s World: Women in New Netherland and Early New York” will be a hybrid event. New Netherland Institute Announces 2019 Lecture Series

New Netherland Conference Call for Papers

The New Netherland Institute (NNI) has announced they are now accepting presentation proposals for their 42nd Annual Conference, which will be hosted by the Hudson River Valley Institute at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, on October 5, 2019.

The program committee welcomes proposals on any aspect of the seventeenth-century Dutch colony, including projects in other media such as films, online exhibits, and other digital projects. New Netherland Research Grant Opportunity

The due date for applications for the New Netherland Institute’s 2019 Charles W. Wendell Research Grant is February 15.

The research project must deal with the Dutch experience in North America and the Dutch Atlantic World, and is expected to result in a
