National Park Week At Saratoga Battlefield

jr rangerSaratoga National Historical Park is set to celebrate National Park Week from April 21-29, with several events and programs.

Saturday, April 21 from 10 am to 4 pm will celebrate kids on Jr. Ranger Day. Children and their families can join in a variety of free, hands-on activities including a touch table with animal skins and skulls, talk to a real wildland firefighter, run in a relay race, dress up in a uniform, or complete a Junior Ranger activity book. FDR’s 136th Birthday At West Point Tuesday

FDR 135th Birthday The National Park Service will commemorate President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 136th birthday on Tuesday, January 30th at 3 pm.

The event is held in the Rose Garden at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, New York.

FDR, Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Series In Hyde Park

fdr eleanor rooseveltThe National Park Service and the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Historical Association have announced a new lecture series focusing on Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Human Rights, beginning on Thursday, January 25th.

The speaker series will include lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, and performances presented by historians, park rangers, activists, artists, and entrepreneurs.

All programs will be held at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center, 4079 Albany Post Rd, Hyde Park, NY.  The list of scheduled programs includes:

Slavery In The Mohawk Valley Event Thursday

Johnson Hall State Historic SiteOn Thursday, August 24 Travis M. Bowman, Senior Curator with the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites, will present “Slavery in the Mohawk Valley”, examining how slavery evolved in New York under the Dutch, British, and American systems of government and how the institution was utilized at a local and personal level in the Mohawk Valley. Usually considered a “Southern” issue, slavery played a surprisingly large role in colonial and revolutionary era New York.

The lecture will begin at 6:30 pm at Johnson Hall State Historic Site, with refreshments served at the conclusion. There is no admission charge, but donations to support Johnson Hall’s interpretive programs and ongoing restoration will be appreciated. Saratoga Battlefield Tour Road Closure

The Tour Road through Saratoga National Historical Park will be closed through Friday, August 25, 2017 for resurfacing and again Tuesday, August 29 for surface repairs. This is part of a routine cyclic maintenance project in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration.

The project is focusing on all major bridges and culverts in the park, specifically the bridges and culverts on the Entrance Road and the pier bridge on the Tour Road. Please use caution when driving on the Entrance Road for the next month. [Read more…] about Saratoga Battlefield Tour Road Closure

National Parks Senior Pass Price Rises, Limited Availability

2017 Senior PassThe amount of people buying a $10 National Parks senior pass before the price increases on August 28 has created a shortage of passes available in parts of Upstate New York.

Citing “requirements set by legislation passed by Congress in December 2016,” the National Parks Service is increasing the price of the America the Beautiful-National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass from $10 to $80. Study: National Park Visits Added $34.9B to US Economy

During the 2017 National Park Week, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke announced that 2016’s record visitation of 331 million visitors at America’s 417 National Park Service sites contributed $34.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2016 – a $2.9 billion increase from 2015. Saratoga NHP Announces 58% Visitation Increase in 2016

2016 marked a banner year for visitation at Saratoga National Historical Park. Over 102,000 people visited the park during the 100th anniversary year of the National Park Service.

This was a 58% increase in park visitation from 2015. The park witnessed an increase in visitors attending ranger programs, special events, hiking and cycling, and touring the park’s historic sites, according to the Park Service. 24 New National Historic Landmarks Named

department-of-interiorAs the National Park Service enters its second century of service, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced the designation of 24 new National Historic Landmarks.

The National Historic Landmarks Program recognizes historic properties of exceptional value to the nation and promotes the preservation efforts of federal, state, and local agencies and Native American tribes, as well as those of private organizations and individuals. The program is one of more than a dozen administered by the National Park Service that provide states and local communities technical assistance, recognition and funding to help preserve our nation’s shared history, and create close-to-home recreation opportunities.
