Long Island’s Classic Suburbs: Garden City and Levittown

1872 “Apostle” house, now the home of the Garden City Historical Society Garden City and Levittown are two famous landmarks in the history of suburban America. Located just a few miles apart on what was once the Hempstead Plains in Nassau County, Long Island, the two communities were founded in different centuries, under different circumstances, and for different reasons.

Despite their differences in origin and subsequent development, the two communities share some underlying similarities.
