Museums Advocacy Call Thurs, Registration Deadline Today

Museum Associaion of New York (MANY) staff, members of their Board of Directors’ Advocacy Committee and MANY’s government relations consultant Sheila Healy will lead a conference call July 18th to discuss museum advocacy efforts and recent legislation.

Recently passed New York State legislation is expected to impact museums’ relationships with their communities and their financial sustainability. The call will also address the museum community’s efforts to increase in funding to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) in 2020. Exhibit at Erie Canal Museum Explores Water’s Enviro, Cultural Impacts

Erie Canal Museum Water Street paintingAfter visiting almost every state, Museum on Main Street is making its New York State debut with the Water/Ways exhibit this June at the Erie Canal Museum.

The Erie Canal Museum and the surrounding community has been chosen by the Museum Association of New York to host Water/Ways as part of the Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program ― a national/state/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations. Museum Assoc of NY Gets Capacity Building Grant

The Museum Association of New York (MANY) has been awarded a $10,000 capacity building grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to grow it’s technological capacity so that it may better advocate for museums, historical societies, zoos, botanical gardens, and aquariums across New York State. NY Museum Awards of Merit Nominations Sought

The Museum Association of New York (MANY) is now accepting nominations for their 2019 Awards of Merit.

MANY’s Awards of Merit recognize outstanding, innovative programs, staff, and volunteers who have enriched New York State museums with new and remarkable projects. Any organization or individual can nominate an organization, person(s), or project completed in 2018 at a museum, historic site, wildlife center, and/or cultural institution in the state of New York. NYS Museum Education Act Passes, Headed To Governor

On June 20th the New York State Assembly passed A.3892A, the Museum Education Act (MEA). This bill, sponsored in the New York State Assembly by Matthew Titone (D, Staten Island), was passed by the State Senate in April (S.1676A) through the efforts Betty Little (R, Queensbury).

Smithsonian’s Water-Ways Exhibit Program Coming to NYS

Water/Ways Video Kiosk in Sanibel, FloridaThe Museum Association of New York (MANY) has announced that it will be the organizational partner for the state-wide tour of the Smithsonian Institutions’ Museum on Main Street Water/Ways exhibition.

Water/Ways will travel to six small- to mid-sized museums for six weeks each between June of 2019 and April of 2020. Three museums along the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor will be selected. The fourth site will be located in the Hudson River National Heritage Area, the fifth in Suffolk County, and the sixth location will be any New York museum that makes a strong case for the importance of water to its history and cultural heritage. Historical Societies, Museums Professional Development Grants Available

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation is offering grants to Historical Societies and Historical Museums in NYS with annual budgets of $50,000 or less to attend the Museum Association of New York’s (MANY) annual conference being held April 8 – 10, 2018 in Rochester.

The grant of $1,000 can be used for conference registration, travel, meals/lodging, membership in MANY and the New York Council of Non-Profits. The grant deadline is February 15, 2018. [Read more…] about Historical Societies, Museums Professional Development Grants Available
