Ceremonies Set to Mark Mt Beacon Military Airplane Crashes

The Town of Fishkill and the Friends of the Mt. Beacon Eight have announced a ceremony honoring the eight U.S. Navy servicemen who lost their lives in two separate plane crashes on Mount Beacon, in the Hudson Highlands, set for Saturday, November 7th, at Fishkill’s Veterans Park on RT 52 starting at 10:30 am. The Indestructible Man Book Talk Set

Beacon Lecture On World War II’s ‘Captain Dixie’

the indestructible man bookThe Beacon Sloop Club’s 2018 winter lecture series is planned to begin on Thursday January 11th at 7 pm with The Indestructible Man-The True Story of a World War II Hero “Captain Dixie” by Author David Rocco, at the Beacon Sloop Clubhouse, 2 Flynn Drive, in Beacon, NY.

The Indestructible Man is the story of Navy officer Dixie Kiefer, who was an instrumental player in major battles in World War II. Kiefer was the executive officer on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at both the Battle of the Coral Sea and Battle of Midway. He was the last man off Yorktown before she sank at Midway. Exhibition Features Mt. Beacon Incline Railway

Beacon Incline, the Mount Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society has announced the opening of a six-month exhibition. Entitled Along the Mt. Beacon Incline Railway: Past, Present & Future, the exhibition explores the initiative to bring back the Mt. Beacon Incline through the lenses of a historic narrative and an eye towards the future.

As Beacon, in Dutchess County, continues to transform and revitalize, the organizers argue, the Incline’s restoration provides a unique opportunity to connect the past with the future in a way that is meaningful to the city’s heritage and relevant to the community of today.
