Tour of Historic Ferndale Set For Sunday

historic ferndale schoolhouseThe Liberty Museum & Arts Center will host a walking tour of historic Ferndale, Sullivan County, led by Maurice Gerry, on Sunday, August 27.

Gerry’s preservation and restoration efforts are responsible for the current state of many of the homes and buildings in Ferndale. Participants in the walking tour will have the chance to see Gerry’s work firsthand, and learn about the history of the hamlet.

Catskills Preservation and History Conference This Weekend

Sullivan county map 1892The Liberty Museum & Arts Center in Sullivan County will host the 16h Annual Catskills Preservation and History Conference on Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and 27.

The events begin at 10 am on Saturday with the 22nd annual Architectural and Historical Tour, which this year will feature a behind the scenes look at two of the most iconic institutions in Sullivan County’s history, the Loomis Sanatorium and Grossinger’s resort, and explore the link between them. 13th Catskills Preservation And History Conference

Conferencephoto2013The Liberty Museum & Arts Center has announced the schedule for their 13th annual Catskills Preservation and History Conference, to be held at the Museum in Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, on Sunday, August 24.

The theme of this year’s conference is “500 Hotels! Tourism in the Sullivan County Catskills: Past, Present and Future.”  The full day event includes a driving and walking tour in the morning, and programs and panel discussions throughout the day, culminating in the presentation of the Second Annual Catskills Preservation Award and the opening reception for the “Pollack’s Hotel Exhibit” at 7 PM. Heritage Tourism And Sullivan County

FortMarketFaire13There seems to be a great movement underway in recent years—the European Union is a good example—to make all places the same or at least more like each other.  This global homogenization, for want of a better term, has threatened national identities and it has also created new challenges for those areas whose economies have been dependent upon heritage tourism.

Heritage tourism is defined by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as “traveling to experience the places, artifacts and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past,” but it is only viable if different places have different stories to tell.  Eliminating differences makes that a real challenge. The Magical History Tour: Revolution to Revolution

The Museum at Bethel Woods- Exhibit View (1)Architect Robert Dadras is quick to admit that when he helped conceive the idea of an Architectural-Historical Bus Tour back in 1996, he wasn’t at all sure it would catch on.

“There were comments like, where will you ever find architecture in Sullivan County?” he recalls.

The fact that cities from Miami, Florida and Greensboro, North Carolina to Chicago, Illinois and Toronto, Canada had successfully used similarly constructed tours to boost tourism and economic development did not make it any easier to sell the idea locally, Dadras concedes, at the same time relishing the fact that this year’s tour will be his nineteenth.
