250 Acres, More Than A Mile Of Lake George Shoreline Infected With Hemlock Pest

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid provided by DECThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which confirmed an invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) infestation at Lake George in August, says that the infestation affects nearly 250 acres and 1.5 miles of shoreline on Forest Preserve lands in the towns of Dresden and Fort Ann, Washington County.

The affected hemlocks are located along in the busy Glen Island Campground area of the Narrows, including Glen Island and camping areas on the eastern shoreline.  This is the second known infestation of HWA in the Adirondacks; an earlier infestation is believed to have been brought under control at the summit of Prospect Mountain, reached by the Prospect Mountain Veteran Memorial Highway, just outside Lake George Village.

Summit Area of Prospect Mountain Highway Reopens

New Book Recalls Historic Lake George Swim

called by the waterThe new book Called by the Water tells the story of Diane Struble, who swam the length of Lake George in 1958, from her daughter Gwenne’s perspective, including many mid-century Lake George personalities and news articles relating to the iconic event.

Fourteen people have swam the length of Lake George since Struble. This week a 54-year-old Vermont woman who accomplished the feat became the oldest to do so, and did it in the fastest time.

Another Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Infestation Found At Lake George

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid provided by DECAn infestation of invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges tsugae) has been confirmed on Lake George in the town of Dresden, Washington County.

The affected hemlock trees were located near a campsite within Glen Island Campground on the shore of Lake George. This is the second known infestation of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) in the Adirondacks. The first was located at Prospect mountain near Lake George three years ago. Bradley’s Lookout Over Lake George Being Protected

Portion of Lake George Tributary Protected

Fairy Brook Corridor provided by LGLCThe Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has protected 25 acres on County Route 6 in the Town of Dresden on the east side of Lake George in Washington County, NY.

The property includes 1,300 feet of Fairy Brook, a small tributary of Lake George which drains north into Lake Champlain at Ticonderoga and ultimately into the Richelieu and then St. Lawrence Rivers into the North Atlantic. [Read more…] about Portion of Lake George Tributary Protected
