Champlain Pollution Reduction Proposals Sought

Lake Champlain bridgeThe Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is seeking proposals for projects that will reduce pollution from storm water runoff in the Lake Champlain watershed.

The LCBP will fund projects that install large-scale best management practices (BMPs) or provide planning and prioritization for future on-the-ground storm water treatment projects. Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! Sets Sail on Lake Champlain

stop aquatic hitchikersThe Lake Champlain Basin Program and the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center teamed up with local artist Nikki Laxar to showcase the message Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! on a 420 sailing dinghy that will be featured on the Burlington, VT waterfront for the next three years.

New Projects to Preserve, Celebrate Champlain Valley Heritage

Fishhook Waterflea Infesting Lake Champlain

Thousands of fishhook and spiny waterfleas coat a fishing lineBoaters returning from the waters of Lake Champlain at Shelburne Bay have reported large quantities of invasive fishhook waterflea fouling their fishing lines.

First identified in Lake Champlain in 2018, masses of fishhook waterfleas began to appear on the 20th of June this year, as observed by trained Lake Champlain boat launch stewards.

No known control methods exist to eliminate fishhook or spiny waterflea once established in a water body. Efforts now focus on preventing the spread of this species to other bodies of water in the region. [Read more…] about Fishhook Waterflea Infesting Lake Champlain
