DEC Releases New Forest Preserve Work Policy

The Black Mountain Fire Tower on Lake George Is One of Kind

Black Mountain Fire Tower on Lake GeorgeThe fire tower on Black Mountain, in the Lake George Wild Forest on the lake’s eastern side in Washington County, NY, was constructed in 1916 and has been maintained by New York State Police since 1996 when a 39-foot extension was added. The 80-foot-tall structure supports several antennas, a microwave dish and an aerial beacon, the only one of its kind in New York state. Eagle Trail along the Mohawk RiverThe Eagle Trail is a project of the Friends of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter, in Montgomery County, NY.

Originally served for the transportation of heavy machinery and equipment for Lock 11 repairs, the Eagle Trail begins at the east end of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site at the Yankee Hill Lock and proceeds to the southside of the city of Amsterdam, a distance of about three miles. The public is invited to submit input on the draft plans, which will guide future management of the facilities over the next five years and their conformance to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan.
