Rangers Make Another Rescue at Kaaterskill Falls

Ranger Fox helps with rescue at Kaaterskill FallsAccording to a press release issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conervation (DEC), on February 20th at 12:10 pm, Forest Ranger Fox responded to a report of a subject on the ice approximately seven feet from the edge of Kaaterskill Falls. Environmental Conservation Police Officer (ECO) Lt. Glorioso and ECO Palmateer also responded.

Rangers Recover Dog’s Body at Kaaterskill Falls; Respond to Snowmobile Accidents

Hudson-Athens Lighthouse’s Once-in-a Century Renovation

Hudson-Athens Lighthouse courtesy Jonathon Simons The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society (HALPS) has announced the award of a $500,000 grant by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). The grant will support work to restore and protect the infrastructure of the 147-year-old Hudson-Athens Lighthouse’s primary building.

Work includes replacing its flat roof, mansard slate side roofs, gutters, and downspouts, all designed to eliminate damaging, ongoing water intrusion. In addition, a new staircase from the dock up to the building’s deck will increase and expand access and safety. Installation of an upgraded marine toilet and cistern repairs are also part of plan. First Confirmed EHD Survivor Reported By DEC

NYS first confirmed survivor of EHDDuring the late summer and early fall, an outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) led to the death of a significant number of whitetail deer in parts of New York State.

On Nov. 2, Environmental Conservation Officer Palmateer received information from a Catskill, Greene County, NY family about a youth hunter who shot a buck with bow and arrow a buck that had deformities on its hooves.  The family reported that it looked like the hooves were starting to detach from the deer. Ilegally killed bear seized by ECOs in Greene CountyEnvironmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Palmateer reported he received an anonymous tip in early October about a wounded bear seen near land conservancy property in the town of Greenville, Greene County, during opening weekend of bow season. Knowing this area is closed to hunting and not high density for bears, ECO Palmateer contacted Investigator Sulkey for help surveilling the area. Hudson Eagles Riverfront Project Launches in Greene County

Coxsackie State Boat Launch courtesy NYS ParksThe first state boat launch on the Hudson River to be upgraded under the Hudson Eagles Recreation Area program will be the Coxsackie State Boat Launch in the village’s Riverside Park.

Construction of the $3.2 million project began in September and is expected to be completed by spring 2022. It starts an initiative to improve public access and resiliency on the Hudson River between Albany and Kingston, while enhancing connections to waterfront communities in the region. Thurlow Weed, Stephen Van Rensselaer III and the Disputed Election of 1824

A Young Thurlow Weed (2)Thurlow Weed was born on November 15, 1797, the son of Joel and Mary (Elis) Weed, in Cairo, Greene County, NY where his grandfather settled after the Revolutionary War. His father was a farmer who was apparently hard working but never prosperous, occasionally spending time in jail for debt.

In 1799, the family moved to Catskill where young Weed received a small amount of schooling. His first job was pumping a blacksmith’s bellows while the blacksmith formed heated iron. New State Record White Crappie is 4 Lbs+

Roy Isaac with state record crappieNew York has it’s second state record fish caught in 2021. On August 21st after catching several large crappie from Sleepy Hollow Lake in Greene County, Roy Isaac’s persistence paid off when he hooked into a 19 inch, 4 lb. 7 oz. white crappie using a live minnow.
