Mellon Awards $500k To NY Humanities Council

UniversityThe Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the New York Council for the Humanities a grant to support and expand their Humanities Centers Initiative to 42 new Public Humanities Fellows over the next three years.

The Humanities Centers Initiative is a collaboration between the Council and seven research universities: New York University, CUNY Graduate Center, Columbia University, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Buffalo, Cornell University, and Syracuse University. Museum Planning, Travel Grants Available

MANY LogoThe New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) has provided $102,000 to be distributed by the Museum Association of New York (MANY) between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2015.

NYS Arts Council Awards $36 Million

nysca logoThe New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) has announced it has awarded $36 million in 1,899 grants to 1,242 New York State non-profit organizations to supports arts, culture and heritage organizations in New York State.

NYSCA awards grants in 16 program areas representing a cross-section of artistic disciplines and funding goals. Across the disciplines, grants support arts, culture and heritage programming; organizational operations; individual artists’ projects; additional granting opportunities, known as ‘regrants’ and services to the field. Erie Canalway Event Grants Available

Erie Canalway MapTo give canal-related events a boost, the Erie Canalway Heritage Corridor has teamed up with the NYS Canal Corporation to offer a limited number of sponsorships of up to $500 for events or festivals taking place in the National Heritage Corridor from May through November 2015.

N-Y Historical To Add Institutional Records Access

NYC_Historical_SocietyThe New-York Historical Society has received a grant of $304,470 from the Leon Levy Foundation to preserve and process its institutional archives, which document the institution’s 210-year history. “The two-year initiative will improve scholarly access to the archives and open a trove of material for a broad range of research possibilities,” an announcement sent to the press said.

The records document various aspects of the New-York Historical Society, encompassing collecting, exhibitions, research, scholarly and social activities, and even day-to-day operations. As part of this two-year project, New-York Historical is expected to arrange and describe over 1,600 linear feet of records, converting them from a modestly used, in-house resource to publicly accessible research collection. The Whitehill Prize in Early American History

Colonial Massachussesttes SocietyThe Colonial Society of Massachusetts has announced the 2014 Walter Muir Whitehill Prize in Early American History.

This prize of $2,500, established in memory of Walter Muir Whitehill, for many years Editor of Publications for the Colonial Society and the moving force behind the organization, will be awarded for a distinguished essay on early American history (up to 1825), not previously published, with preference being given to New England subjects. Museum and Library Services Grants Awarded In NYS

imls logoThe Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded grants for 211 museum projects totaling over $25M through its Museums for America and National Leadership Grants for Museums programs.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services grants are the primary source of federal support for the nations’ 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums.

Grants ranging from $2,000 to $7,000 will be awarded for projects that serve to advance the goals of the Erie Canalway Preservation and Management Plan.

Two Historians Among 2014 MacArthur Fellows

2014 macarthur fellowsRecognizing 21 exceptionally creative individuals with a track record of achievement and the potential for significant contributions in the future, the The MacArthur Foundation today named its 2014 MacArthur Fellows, including two historians: Tara Zahra, 38, or the University of Chicago, and Pamela O. Long, 71, of Washington, DC.
