Women and Children in the Civil War

Civil War drummer boys off duty playing cards in camp during the winter of 1862 (Library of Congress)During the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, over two million soldiers served in either the United States or Confederate States armies. It’s estimated that 250,000–420,000 boys under the age of 18 and as young as 12 were involved on both sides and about 100,000 United States Army soldiers were 15 years of age or younger.  Women who disguised themselves as men also served in combat, with conservative estimates putting the number between 400 and 750. Grant Cottage Master Plan Meeting Set for May 23rd

Grant Cottage State Historic Site & National Historic Landmark it’s hoped will provide a roadmap for a comprehensive set of “improvements to enhance visitor engagement, accessibility and safety, and circulation while expanding the site infrastructure for increased visitation and grand events,” according to an email sent to supporters. Friends of Grant Cottage Names New Executive Director

Grant CottageThe Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Beth J. Merrill as the new Executive Director of The Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark, effective immediately. Merrill, a native of Hudson Falls in Washington County, NY, brings with her extensive experience in marketing and management in consumer-facing companies, including Fortune 100 companies, start-ups, consulting, and entrepreneurship. Friends of Grant Cottage Director Steve Porto Retires

Grant CottageFriends of Grant Cottage State Historic Site (and National Historic Landmark) Director Steve Porto is retiring. Porto has been with the organization for almost five years, after 14 years as Director of Parks and Recreation at Gavin Park in Wilton, NY.
