Multiple Upstate NY Wildfires Keep Rangers Busy

Aftermath of the wildland fire in Blenheim in mid-May 2023 (provided by DEC)New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers were kept busy last week suppressing numerous wildfires around New York State as very dry conditions persisted and drove the Fire Danger to HIGH.   Fires were reported in at least five towns in four counties, including in Clinton, Sullivan, Schoharie, and Albany Counties. The fires burned about 50 acres total including a large 30-acre fire that burned ion the town of Black Brook, Clinton County, for two days.  At least two fires were caused by illegal debris burning despite the high danger for fire spread.

Forest Rangers Recover Body of Missing Man in the Catskills

Forestburgh search and recovery April 2023On March 31th, five New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers responded to a request for assistance in the search for a subject who went missing after off-roading with a friend on March 29th in the Catskills town of Forestburgh, Sullivan County.  The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and New York State Police (NYSP) K9 units were also on scene. Neversink River Management Plan Comments Sought

Neversink River Unit Management Plan MapThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced the release of the Draft Neversink River Unit Management Plan (UMP) for public comment. The plan guides the future uses and management of approximately 8,644 acres of DEC-managed public lands within the Neversink River Unit in the towns of Forestburgh and Mamakating in Sullivan County, and Highland and Wawarsing in Ulster County, NY.
