A French Officer’s Visit To Fishkill Supply Depot, 1780

The following is an excerpt from Travels in North-America, in the years 1780-81-82 by François Jean de Beauvoir, Marquis de Chastellux (1734-1788), a French military officer who served during the American Revolution under General Comte de Rochambeau. Here he describes his travels in Dutchess County, including a visit to Fishkill Supply Depot.

The country is well cultivated; affording the prospect of several pretty farms, with some mills; and notwithstanding the [Revolutionary] war, Hopel township [Hopewell Junction in Dutchess County] is building, inhabited chiefly by Dutch people, as well as the greatest part of the state of New York, which formerly belonged to the republic of Holland, who exchanged it for Surinam. Heroes of Fishkill Day Set for May 26th

The Second Heroes of Fishkill Day has been set for May 26, 2018, from 9 am to 3 pm at the Rombout Rural Cemetery, 1571 Route 52 in Fishkill, NY.

On Memorial Day Help Protect Fishkill’s American Revolution Cemetery

On Memorial Day the New York History Blog encourages you to take a moment to support Friends of the Fishkill Supply Depot who are working to protect 10.4 acres that include an abandoned American Revolutionary War Soldiers’ Cemetery from commercial development.

In late 2007, an archaeological team rediscovered the cemetery on privately-owned land just south of the Van Wyck Homestead along U.S. Route 9 in Fishkill. Fishkill served as the Patriots’ principal supply depot throughout the American Revolution, providing troops with supplies, weapons, ammunitions, transport, and food from 1776-1783. The majority of the original 70-acre site has already been lost to commercial and transportation development. The Van Wyck Homestead served as the headquarters for what was George Washington’s principal supply depot during the Revolutionary War and is the site’s only remaining structure. A Revolutionary War Cemetery Reveals More Secrets

An historical researcher studying the pension files of Revolutionary War veterans has identified a Maryland officer who died at the Fishkill Supply Depot and was buried in a long-abandoned Revolutionary War cemetery threatened by development.

In late 2007, an archaeological team rediscovered the cemetery on privately-owned land just south of the Van Wyck Homestead along U.S. Route 9. Revolutionary War Traitors, Spies, Focus of Fishkill Event

“Traitors & Spies: An American Revolutionary War Experience” is the theme of a Sunday, September 14th educational program sponsored by the Friends of the Fishkill Supply Depot at the Hyatt House in Fishkill from 2 until 4 pm. “This community program,” explained Lance Ashworth the Friends’ president, “will support our mission to keep the history of the American Revolutionary War alive in the Hudson Valley and to bring the heritage of the Fishkill Supply Depot to more and more people.”

Speakers include Stephen Case, author of Treacherous Beauty: Peggy Shippen, the Woman behind Benedict Arnold’s Plot to Betray America; Damien Cregeau, an independent historian, who will discuss spying in and around New York City during the war; and Rachel Smith from the State Historian’s office at the University of Connecticut who will shed light on Nathan Hale’s legacy.
