Historic Saranac River Dam Removal Projects Underway

Remnants of the Fredenburgh Falls Dam on the Saranac River before removal in 2023Fish in the Saranac River are about to experience some new-found freedom. Deconstruction to remove the remnants of the Indian Rapids Dam and Frendenburgh Falls Dam in Plattsburgh is just about complete, which means fish will now be able to move more freely on that stretch of river. Lake Trout Research Underway on Lake Ontario

Wild Lake TroutThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in collaboration with the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS), New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Fisheries, with outreach assistance from New York Sea Grant (NYSG) has been collecting research data on Lake Ontario lake trout movement using acoustic telemetry tags.
