Cooperstown Farmers’ Market Celebrating 35th Year Saturday

Cooperstown Farmers Market (provided)The Cooperstown Farmers’ Market will celebrate its 35th year on Saturday, August 15th. During the Market day, which runs from 9 am to 2 pm, there will be 33 local farmers and vendors, two sets of live music, kids’ activities to celebrate Honeybee Day, and a Market Bingo raffle.

At 11 am, there will be a brief program featuring New York State Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets Richard Ball; Meg Kennedy, owner of ARK Floral, which was a founding vendor of the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market; and Jim Dalton and Ellen Pope of Otsego 2000, which founded the Market in 1991. New Name, Host for Lake Placid, Saranac Lake Farmers’ Markets

Saranac Lake Farmers’ Market shoppers browse fresh produce grown by Fledging Crow VegetableThe weekly farmers’ markets in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks will continue to offer locally produced farm products and handmade goods — but under a new name and host organization.

The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) announced that it will provide organizational support for the two markets under the newly dubbed “High Peaks Farmers’ Market.” ANCA will also hire a part-time manager to oversee the markets. Farmers Markets: An Alternative to a Food System in Flux

Sign seen during curbside pick-up at the Saranac Lake Farmers’ Park It - Adirondack HarvestIn March, when Governor Cuomo signed the New York State on PAUSE executive order, which mandated that all non-essential businesses in New York State had to close, farmer’s markets were exempted as essential retail businesses and, as such, allowed to open or remain open.

But, as concerns about the spread of COVID-19 grew, farmers market growers, gardeners, and managers, like other small business operators, found themselves rushing to come up with innovative contingency plans to modify their operations and employ solutions that would protect their livelihoods, as well as the health and well-being of their customers, market workers, and the community at large.
