Virtual Lecture: Conceiving The Erie Canal

The Conception of the Erie CanalThe Oneida County History Center has announced a free virtual lecture by Erie Canal Museum Educator Derrick Pratt, looking at the early efforts to harness New York’s interior waterways and the political wrangling that almost kept the Erie Canal from happening.

Completed in 1825 to create a navigable water route between the Atlantic Ocean at city of New York and the Great Lakes, the Canal was the second longest in the world and greatly enhanced the development and economy of the United States. But while the Erie Canal took only eight years to dig, it was a nearly 100-year long process to get started, often mocked by those who thought it impossible or unnecessary.

This years recipients are Erie Canal Heritage Park at Port Byron and Gateway Harbor of the Tonawandas in North Tonawanda and Tonawanda. The Port of Newark in Newark received Honorable Mention. Progress Being Made At Historic Matton Shipyard in Cohoes

Matton Shipyard Cohoes Photo ca 1949The historic Matton Shipyard is a rare surviving example of an early 20th century ship building and repair facility. From 1916 to 1983, Matton workers built more than 340 tug boats, police boats, WWII submarine chasers, and other vessels.
