New Adaptive Canal Cycling Guide Available

Adaptive Cycling Along the Erie CanalwayThe Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor has announced a new guide from the Fitness Inclusion Network (Fit-IN) that provides information to help organizations and communities promote and grow inclusive bicycling recreation along the Erie Canalway Trail.

Registration Open for Cycle the Erie Canal 2018

parks and trails nyRegistration is now open for Parks & Trails New York’s 20th anniversary Cycle the Erie Canal tour, an opportunity to bike across New York State and take in the rich history of the canal that transformed America.

Report Tracks Erie Canalway Trail Progress

cyclist on the erie canalwayParks & Trails New York (PTNY) and the Canalway Trails Association New York (CTANY) have released their sixth annual report – Closing the Gaps: A Progress Report on the Erie Canalway Trail 2015  – detailing progress made in completing the statewide Erie Canalway Trail as a continuous, off-road route. With 288 of 360 miles open to the public, the Canalway Trail is 80% complete and well on its way to becoming the longest trail of its kind in the United States, and a significant tourist destination for Upstate New York.

Erie Canalway Events On Tap For 2016

hudson river cardboard boat raceThe Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the New York State Canal Corporation have teamed up to sponsor 28 festivals and events in 2016 to showcase the Canalway Corridor’s nationally significant heritage and the recreational appeal of the waterway and trails today. Events include cycling and paddling tours, canal festivals, and concerts at the waterfront. The canal system is scheduled to open May 1, weather permitting. Erie Canalway Tourism Itineraries Announced

New Erie Canalway Bicycle Loop Routes Available

BikeGuidesMontage_800pxCyclists can now see more of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor using new bicycle tour routes that connect with the cross-state Erie Canalway Trail. The on-road routes, ranging from easy to challenging, take riders through scenic countryside in Orleans, Ontario, Wayne, and Madison counties.

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor spans 524 miles across the full expanse of upstate New York, encompassing the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic alignments, as well as more than 230 canal communities. Erie Canalway Heritage Corridor Events for 2014

Erie Canalway Trail Map Updated For Mobile Devices

Erie Canalway Interactive MapParks & Trails New York’s (PTNY) interactive map of the Erie Canalway Trail — the cross-state route between Buffalo and Albany along the Erie Canal — has been updated and optimized for mobile devices.

With GPS-enabled capability, users can find exactly where they are relative to the Trail and easily locate nearby attractions and services, including museums, historic sites, parks, lodging, bike shops, restaurants, convenience stores, ATMs, pharmacies, and hardware stores. Erie Canalway Executive Director Stepping Down

7After eight years with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, Executive Director Beth Sciumeca has announced that she will be transitioning out of her position as executive director over the next six months to pursue other professional opportunities.

Sciumeca has worked for the Erie Canalway since 2005. She led the organization during the early stages of implementing its Preservation and Management Plan. An announcement that appeared in the Canalway’s newsletter said “She has been instrumental in raising the stature of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor both nationally and statewide.” [Read more…] about Erie Canalway Executive Director Stepping Down
