Amelia Bloomer: Journalist, Suffragist, Anti-fashion Icon

Those who recognize the name Amelia Bloomer (1818-1894) usually do so because of bloomers, the clothing item named after her.

While she was a rational dress advocate for a time — calling on women to abandon rigid corsets and heavy petticoats and opt for long trousers, shorter skirts, and sensible boots — it was “but an incident” in the larger story of her life and impact.

Bloomer edited and published The Lily, one of the first newspapers for and by women. Founded to promote temperance, it soon broadened to include some of the most important issues to women in that day, including the right to vote, and included contributions from thinkers like Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Rare Documents Highlight Temperance & Suffrage History

Two documents which connect Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who helped women organize to secure the right to vote, are being offered for sale.

The newly discovered 1853 documents certify Mr. P.S. Kingsley and Mrs. Angeline Kingsley of Minetto in Oswego County, NY, as members of the first organization founded by Anthony and Stanton, the Women’s New York State Temperance Society, formed in 1852. 1848 European Upheavals & The Seneca Falls Convention

The Revolutions of 1848 set Europe ablaze. The flames erupted in Paris on February 22nd and spread to the German states, the Austrian Empire, the Italian states, Scandinavia and beyond. In their geographical extent alone, these revolts were unique. From a historical perspective, this was the only truly European wide uprising that would – in the longer run – alter the Continent’s political and philosophical landscape.

In spite of the scale and ferocity of the upheaval, its immediate impact on the political status quo was relatively small as most of the short-lived struggles failed in their aims and intentions. State Museum Acquires Women’s Rights Pioneers Central Park Monument Model

The New York State Museum in Albany has acquired the Women’s Rights Pioneers Central Park Monument model. The statue features three nationally recognized leaders of the women’s rights movement, all hailing from New York State: Sojourner Truth (Ulster County), Susan B. Anthony (Rochester), and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Johnstown, Seneca Falls, and NYC). Slave-holding New York State Congressional Representatives: A Complete List

According to a Washington Post report in the early years of the American republic over 1,700 Congressional representatives, Senators and Congressmen owned enslaved people. Despite a very clear conflict of interest they voted on the laws governing the country and the enslaved population. Some Representatives served in Congress long after slavery was finally abolished in New York State.

Five of the first seven U.S. Presidents were definitely slaveholders and at least five other later Presidents had family connections to slavery. Five of the Supreme Court Justices who ruled that African Americans had no citizenship rights under the Constitution in the 1857 Dred Scott decision were slaveholders. From the launch of the state government in April 1777 thru the tragedy of September 11th and through the debut of the musical play Hamilton in 2015, Dearstyne’s chapters describe great political changes, historical turning points, and struggles for social, racial, and environmental reform.

New York Almanack contributor Bill Greer‘s new book A Dirty Year: Sex, Suffrage, and Scandal in Gilded Age New York (Chicago Review Press, 2020) looks back to a time of rigged elections, everyday shootings, and attacks on the press, to sexual impropriety, reproductive rights, and the chasm between rich and poor.

As 1872 opened, the New York Times headlined four stories that seemed symptomatic of the decay in public morals that the editors so frequently decried: financier Jim Fisk was gunned down in a love triangle; suffragist and free-love advocate Victoria Woodhull was running for US President; anti-vice activist Anthony Comstock battled smut dealers; and abortionists were thriving. Quarantine Pastimes: Help Transcribe Women’s Rights History

In recognition of 2020 and the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, Women’s Rights National Historical Park has invited the public to participate in a virtual transcribe-a-thon through the Library of Congress to help build their available sources of research.

Monumental Women has set a date for the unveiling of the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument on the Mall in the City of New York’s Central Park. The statue is the first statue depicting a real woman in the Park’s 167-year History.

The original statue of women’s rights pioneers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony was redesigned to include Sojourner Truth after criticism that the original design excluded the contributions of people of color. It’s being sculpted by Meredith Bergmann. Redesigned Women’s Suffrage Statue Approved For Central Park

The New York City Public Design Commission has approved the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument placement in Central Park. The statue of women’s rights pioneers Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony, will be the first statue depicting real women in the 165-year history of the park.

The statue was redesigned to include Sojourner Truth after criticism that the original design excluded the contributions of people of color. It’s being sculpted by Meredith Bergmann.

The Monumental Women’s Statue Fund announced a redesigned statue to honor pioneering women’s rights advocates – the first statue depicting real women in the 165-year history of New York City’s Central Park.

The redesign comes on the heals of criticism that the original design excluded the contributions of people of color.

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund, Inc. have announced that Meredith Bergmann will be the sculptor for The Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Woman Suffrage Movement Monument Design Competition at The New-York Historical Society.

Meredith’s winning design will be on exhibit at the New-York Historical Society until the end of July. The Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund has announced the four finalists for The Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Woman Suffrage Movement Monument design competition.

Spurred by the #MonumentalWomen campaign to create the first statue of real women in New York City’s Central Park, 91 submissions from artists located throughout the United States were reviewed by a jury consisting of a mix of art and design professionals, historians, as well as representatives from NYC Parks and the Statue Fund. New Book Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial

Jennifer A. Lemak and Ashley Hopkins-Benton’s new book Votes For Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial (Excelsior Editions, 2017) chronicles the history of the women’s rights and suffrage movements in New York State and examines the important role the state played in the national suffrage movement.

The work for women’s suffrage received a boost more than seventy years before the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and one hundred supporters signed the Declaration of Sentiments asserting that “all men and women are created equal.”

This convention served as a catalyst for debates and action on both the national and state level, and on November 6, 1917, New York State passed the referendum for women’s suffrage. Its passing in New York signaled that the national passage of suffrage would soon follow. On August 18, 1920, “Votes for Women” were constitutionally granted.
