Rescue Crews Recover Bodies Upstate, Including Crane Mountain Climber
Backcountry rescue crews had a busy week last week when they responded to reports of people missing in Otsego and St. Lawrence County and a medical emergency in Warren County, NY. The bodies of three people were recovered, including an ice climber who suffered a heart attack at Crane Mountain in the Adirondacks. But What Do They Think?
I like to think that when I stare
off at distant Crane Mountain,
Mateskared Cabin has my back,
and when I climb up on Crane,
Mateskared surely covers me.
Yet I wonder, after these many
years, what might those two be
thinking about us going through
our daily arcane cabin routines,
what with our outdoor cooking
over open wood fires, and our
carrying the pure spring water
by buckets-full indoors and out.
Nor should we forget firewood,
carried by cradled arm-fulls.

Sunday Morning Early
Sitting on the cabin porch
I stare off to Crane Mountain
lording it over Huckleberry
Ridge like a long, slow rivalry
between geological teenagers
until my mind blanks just as,
lifted by the Sun’s early heat,
gentle orographic winds drift
up the valley onto our porch,
where, had I a dog’s nose, I’d
read them like a newspaper.

Steep climbing into more rare air underscores
how what is most immediate takes primacy
You may even suspect an expansive mind
goes before your own like explorers’ scouts
Knowing-ahead was essential to their role,
to evoke the intuitive grounded in experience
Each encounter with the unknown may ape
unlocking our entire panoply of experience
as Beauty and Sanctity chat across disciplines
like circus barkers auditioning for Heaven.

New State Land Purchase In Warren County Includes Climbing Access
New York State has acquired 1,263 acres of land in the Warren County town of Johnsburg in the Southern Adirondacks. The parcel includes Huckleberry Mountain, an elongated peak that tops 2,400 feet, with spectacular cliffs on the ridge’s south and southwest face. The parcel is now part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and is expected to become part of the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest.
In 1911 Huckleberry Mountain was proposed as a site for a massive dam.
