Early Depictions of Mt Lebanon Shakers Lecture in Hudson

Entrance to the Shaker Village, LebanonHistorian Rob Emlen is set to give an illustrated lecture on Early Depictions of Shakers at Mount Lebanon, on Saturday, March 17th from 4 to 5 pm at Stair Galleries, 549 Warren Street, in Hudson.

Following his visit to the Mount Lebanon Shaker village in August, 1856, the New York newspaper artist Benson Lossing made watercolor drawings to guide the production of the wood engravings that illustrated the article he published in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine about daily life in a Shaker community. Although the illustrations for Lossing’s Shaker article were printed in black and white, his original watercolors have survived to give us an extraordinary glimpse at the colors of the Mount Lebanon Shaker village 162 years ago. Kinderhook Lecture On Late 17th Century Dutch Culture

Flower Garden ca. 1660, Pieter de HoochThe Columbia County Historical Society and Historic Hudson have announced the first of their collaborative Winter 2018 programming.

Dutch restoration architect, André Hoek will be at Van Buren Hall on Saturday, January 13 from 4 to 5 pm, to deliver an illustrated lecture on Dutch Culture in the second half of “The Golden Age of Dutch Culture” – “Discovering Layers in Time: Life in The Netherlands 1650-1700; the last half of the Dutch Golden Age.”

Hoek’s talk will explore how the Dutch population lived in the last half of the ‘Golden Age of Dutch Culture’ (the period in which New York State was settled by the Dutch) by examining visual evidence in what remains of Dutch 17th century villages, farms, buildings and gardens and also studying the important paintings of the time which captured interiors and landscapes.  [Read more…] about Kinderhook Lecture On Late 17th Century Dutch Culture

Columbia Co: Gallery of Wreaths Exhibit, Auction

christmas wreathHoliday Wreaths created by community members, organizations, local businesses and artists will be on display at the James Vanderpoel ‘House of History’ in Kinderhook Friday to Sunday, December 1-3 from noon to 4 pm, marking the 32nd Annual Gallery of Wreaths and Silent Auction to benefit the Columbia County Historical Society (CCHS), hosted by the CCHS Volunteers.

The Silent Auction helps support exhibitions and programs for county children and adults. In addition to participating in a Holiday Raffle, the public is invited to bid on live, dried, artificial and mixed-media wreaths all weekend. King is set to give a lecture and sign his new book, Benedict Arnold The Traitor Within on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 pm during a free event, open to the public, at the James Vanderpoel ‘House of History’ in Kinderhook, sponsored by the Columbia County Historical Society Volunteers.

Adirondack Historian To Lecture In Columbia County

Author Glenn Pearsall is set to speak about and sign his new fiction book, Leaves Torn Asunder on Tuesday, October 24 at 7 pm during a free event, open to the public, at the James Vanderpoel ‘House of History’ in Kinderhook, sponsored by the Columbia County Historical Society Volunteers.

Based on true events, Pearsall’s research included diaries, soldiers’ letters home, visits to Civil War battle sites and historical documents such as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Columbia County in WWI Exhibition to Open Saturday

invest in the victory liberty loan posterThe Columbia County Historical Society will honor the 100th anniversary of the United States entering the First World War with a special exhibition focusing on WWI’s profound impact on industry and culture in Columbia County – Supreme Sacrifice: Columbia County in World War I. The exhibition will open to the public and commence with a celebratory wine and cocktail reception, on Saturday, October 21 from 4 to 6 pm at the CCHS Museum Gallery in Kinderhook.

Supreme Sacrifice: Columbia County in World War I explores experiences of County citizens both home and abroad, and investigates larger cultural and economical ramifications caused by the Great War on local life. More than 8,300 men and women from Columbia County registered to serve in some capacity during WWI, with over 1,100 seeing active service abroad, and among which there were at least 95 casualties. Kinderhook ‘Electric Park’ Exhibition Now On Display

The exhibit highlights the culture of Kinderhook Lake’s Electric Park, which operated between 1901 and 1920 in Columbia County, showcasing the phenomena dubbed by newspaper columnists as “postcarditis” – an obsession with sending and receiving postcards – featuring Electric Park postcards that offer poignant glimpses into daily lives of Columbia County residents and visitors during the early 1900s. Hudson River School Painters Presentation In Hudson

hudson river painting by sanford giffordThe Columbia County Historical Society and Historic Hudson will host The Hudson River School (1825-1875), a Slide Show and Conversation with Peter Jung on Sunday,  June 25, 2017. An opening reception will begin at 4:30 pm, the lecture will begin at 5 pm.

The mid-19th century landscape painters of the Hudson River Valley depicted the new American landscape in terms where humans and nature were united in peaceful co-existence. These realist paintings were quite detailed, and often combined many images from diverse natural scenes and vistas observed along the Hudson River as well as the extended geography including the Catskills and Adirondacks. Columbia County on Toll Roads Lecture Nov 12th

east gate toll houseHistoric Hudson and the Columbia County Historical Society have announced an illustrated lecture: “All Roads to the River: The 1799 Columbia Turnpike and Historic Toll Houses,” to be held Saturday, November 12, 4 pm at the Vanderpoel House, 16 Broad Street, in Kinderhook.

Two Toll Houses still stand on either end of Route 23 in Columbia County – both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known as the East Gate (Hillsdale) and the West Gate (Greenport), they marked the beginning and the end of Columbia County’s first turnpike, established in 1799 by the New York State Assembly.
