Canton Eddie, Turn of the Century Safecracker

victor safe small“Canton Eddie” (a.k.a. “Boston Shorty,” Edward Collins, Edward Burns, Harry Wilson and possibly Harry Berger and Eddie Kinsman) who real name is believed to have been Edward Wilson, was a native of St. Lawrence County, born in about 1876 in Canton.

He was the perpetrator of a string of daring robberies in New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont, and probably elsewhere during his lengthy career. Using nitro-glycerin and “the rest of the safecracker’s outfit” he blew the safes of more than 30 post offices, including the Montpelier, Vermont Post Office at least twice in 1905 and in 1907. By the time he was arrested for the last time in 1916, he had already served a number of prison sentences totaling more than nine years. The Fry Family: Black Pioneers of Gouverneur

Village of Gouverneur map 1865In recognition of Black History Month, the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA) is set to host a presentation by De Kalb Historian Bryan Thompson entitled “The Fry Family: Black Pioneers of Gouverneur” on Thursday, February 27th.

TAUNY’s Holiday Open House Dec 7th

tauny open houseTAUNY’s Annual Holiday Open House has been set for Saturday, December 7th from 10 am to 2 pm. The public is invited to enjoy the Sugar & Spice Gingerbread Contest and Display, seasonal treats, live music, kids’ activities, and fun for the whole family. This event is free and open to the public.

Northern and Southern old-time music will be performed by Possumbilities, Nicholfalls, and The Daveys. Kitchen demonstrations will include dumpling-making with Margaret Chang of Sweet Margaret Cafe and more. North Country Folkstore Holiday ShowcaseTAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York), has invited the public to shop for products made by local artists and makers this season at the annual North Country Folkstore Holiday Showcase, set for November 2nd through December 31st at The TAUNY Center in Canton.

This showcase is a temporary expansion of the Folkstore during the holiday season and features a wide variety of additional locally-made products in The TAUNY Center’s first floor gallery space. TAUNY Seeks Proposals for Website Redesign

TAUNY centerTraditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) is currently seeking proposals for redesigning the TAUNY website, tauny.org.

TAUNY expects to select a vendor in late fall 2019, pending receipt of funding. Planning should start in winter 2020, with a goal of launching the new site by the end of fall 2020. Civilian View of War: Civil War Round Table in Canton

St Lawrence County Historical AssociationThe next North Country Civil War Round Table is set for Sunday, February 17th, 2 pm at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association. Dr. Thomas Baker, Zacharey Blackmer, and Emma Woolley and will look at the life of John Raymond, a civilian during the Civil War.

John Raymond of Potsdam was not a soldier: he sold lumber and farmed, and was a little too old for enlisting when the Civil War broke out. However, his position as a prosperous merchant allowed and required him to travel, making his surviving correspondence an illuminating source of a civilian’s view of the events unfurling around the country. Chair-Caning Workshops Set For Canton in March

chair with caned seatThe St. Lawrence County Historical Association has announced a low cost chair-caning workshop on three consecutive Wednesday evenings, March 6, 13, and 20 from 7-9 pm. Carl Stickney, instructor for the workshop, has decades of experience in chair-caning.

Participants in the workshop should bring a chair with the old caning removed. The appropriate chair, which will take a caned seat, has holes around the inner edge of the opening in the chair seat frame. These holes are also visible from the underside of the chair.
