Camp Santanoni Annual Winter Weekends Cancelled

Ski, Snowshoe Into Adirondack Great Camp History

skiiers at santanoniWhile the grounds of Great Camp Santanoni in Newcomb are open to visitors 365 days a year, the buildings are not typically open to the public during winter months.

The exception are designated Winter Weekends, when the rustic historic site is staffed with guides, and snowshoes are provided at the gate for the ten-mile round trip.

Adirondack Great Camps, Rustic Tradition Talk Near Schenectady

New York State’s Adirondack Park, a six-million-acre mixture of public and private lands, is the largest park east of the Mississippi River. Sixty percent of the region’s lands are constitutionally protected as “forever wild” and these lands include vast forests, hundreds of mountains, thousands of lakes and ponds, and miles of wild and scenic rivers.

During the late 19th century, the region became a mecca for sportsmen and other people seeking recreation and revitalization in the wild places of the region. In response to this, native builders and professional architects developed a rustic style of architecture that is best represented by a series of building complexes known as Great Camps. Newcomb’s TR Weekend Set For Sept 14-15th

Newcomb is set to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt’s journey out of the Adirondack High Peaks to the White House to become the 26th President, following William McKinley’s assassination. TR Weekend will be celebrated September 14-15, 2018.

This year’s event coincides with the 125th anniversary of the completion of Camp Santanoni. The camp was built in 1892 for Robert C. Pruyn, a banker and industrialist from Albany. When Camp Santanoni was being constructed on the shores of Newcomb Lake, the property included 13,000 acres. Adirondack Great Camp Lecture In Albany Sunday

Portion of the principal Temple Tycoons Cemetery Yedo,Steven Engelhart is set to give a lecture on Camp Santanoni, a historic great camp located in Newcomb, on Sunday, March 11 at 2 pm at the Albany Institute of History & Art.

Engelhart is the Director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage. This lecture will examine the influence of Japanese architecture on the construction of the camp, the Pruyn family of Albany, and the history of the use of Camp Santanoni. Adirondack Great Camp Santanoni Tours Planned

image001(9)Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) will host four tours of Great Camp Santanoni in Newcomb. Built for Robert and Anna Pruyn of Albany beginning in 1892, Santanoni eventually included 12,900 acres and nearly four-dozen buildings.

Two More Winter Weekends Planned at Camp Santanoni

santanoni winterFollowing the success of last year’s open house ski weekends at historic Great Camp Santanoni, located off Route 28N in Newcomb (Essex County) in the Central Adirondacks, they are being offered again this year. Over two more weekends, visitors can arrive at their leisure and enjoy a self-guided trip from the Gate Lodge, past the Farm and on to the Main Lodge.

On the far side of the Lodge is the Artist’s Studio, where cross-country skiers and snowshoers will be able to warm up before the return trip.
