On Friday, January 24, 2025 at about 11:40 am, Greene County requested New York State Forest Ranger assistance to rescue an injured ice climber at Buttermilk Falls in the town of Hunter, Greene County, NY.

A new report conducted by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) and the New York Office of State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) confirms that statewide greenway trail expansion continues to lead the nation, with 45.2 new miles of trail completed between January 2023 and June 2024.

It’s located near the city of Ithaca in Tompkins County and takes its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows through the steep valley toward Cayuga Lake. Its diverse habitats harbor an equally diverse array of wildlife.
As you ascend Buttermilk Creek’s steep gorge, the sound of deep, rhythmic knocking may lead you to spot the impressive pileated woodpecker.
