The Arthur Murray Girls Baseball Team

long island history project logoIn 1949 nine women of the Arthur Murray Girls baseball team took the field against the all-male squad from the Patchogue Athletics. By that year, the Murrays had been together as a semi-pro outfit for some time. Formed out of the sandlots and playgrounds of Queens, they grew under the tutelage of New York Times sportswriter Mike Strauss to become the nucleus of a league that, by the late 1940s, became the American Girls Baseball Conference. This is no less true within the sandy shores and glacial uplands of Long Island.

Fireplace Neck Tidal Wetland Area Restoration Begins

Nearly $1M Awarded in Community Forest Conservation Grants

Cunningham Community Forest in Chestertown, NY (courtesy Town of Chester)New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced more than $956,000 in awards to four towns in western and central New York and Long Island to establish community forests.

Protecting forests from potential development and establishing new forested areas helps preserve biodiversity and safeguard the ecosystem benefits forests provide, such as storm water mitigation, temperature regulation, carbon sequestration, and climate resiliency.
