Brockport’s Morgan-Manning House Seeks Community Support

Historic landmarks are resources in the important work of placemaking, embodying and communicating the uniqueness of each of the localities we call home. The stately Italianate house at 151 Main Street Village of Brockport, Monroe County, has long been such an icon in the village of Brockport.

Built in 1854, it was the home of successive generations of the Morgan family from 1867 until 1964. In the latter year, however, a fire severely damaged the house, seemingly dashing the desire of the last Morgan sibling Sara Morgan Manning – who lost her life in the fire – that the home “stand forever as a monument to the fine old traditions that are so important to our heritage.” [Read more…] about Brockport’s Morgan-Manning House Seeks Community Support

Brockport Pedestrian Bridge Completed

Western NY’s Mid-Century Modern Round Banks

Rochester, NY was home to approximately 14 mid-century modern round banks built between 1968 and 1974. Characterized by traditional mid-century modern features, including large windows, flat roofs, and clean lines, the banks are credited to architecture firm Pioch & Mellen and were originally built for Columbia Bank.

Carl Akeley’s Taxidermy History in New York State

Here is a recent news item regarding the re-installation of what is believed to be “probably the world’s largest mounted fish, maybe the largest piece of taxidermy in the world” – a 73-year-old, 32-foot, mounted whale shark caught off Fire Island in 1935 and believed to have weighed about 8 tons (16,000 pounds).

It has been freshly restored was unveiled at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, where it was damaged by water leakage that closed part of the museum in 1996. [Read more…] about Carl Akeley’s Taxidermy History in New York State
