The Battle of Long Island went down in history as a major defeat for the fledgling American army and George Washington. The fighting in late August 1776 focused around the Gowanus Heights in Brooklyn and saw the patriots outflanked on their left, routed by Hessians in the center, and hunted down across the marshy Gowanus Creek.

Battlefield Trust Hopes to Acquire 1781 Battle of Johnstown Lands
On October 25, 1781, an American militia under the command of Col. Marinus Willett fought a British raiding party under the command of Maj. John Ross and Capt. Walter Butler in Johnstown (Tryon, later Fulton County). It’s known as the Battle of Johnstown.

26 Acres Added to Saratoga National Historical Park
The American Battlefield Trust has transferred 25.6 historic acres to the National Park Service (NPS) for permanent care and stewardship, allowing the Saratoga National Historical Park to deepen its interpretive offerings, particularly related to the siege that occurred between the opening and concluding battles of the month-long engagement known as the Battles of Saratoga. Sackets Harbor’s Horse Island: A Shared Heritage
Sackets Harbor’s strategic location on the eastern end of Lake Ontario made it the only possible site for the American military command during the War of 1812.
This natural harbor, located in Haudenosaunee territory, became a hub of activity for shipbuilding drawing thousands of personnel and a place to amass war materiel.
