Lecture: Albany’s 1945 ‘Negro Artist Comes of Age’ Exhibit

On Sunday at 2 pm Stephen J. Tyson will give a lecture on the Albany Institute of History & Art’s landmark 1945 exhibition The Negro Artist Comes of Age. The lecture is open to the public and is included with museum admission.

The Negro Artist Comes of Age was organized in 1945 under the leadership of the Albany Institute of History & Art’s John Davis Hatch Jr., with assistance from artist and professor Hale Woodruff.

The March 4th slide-lecture presentation will examine selected artists and works, aspects of the broader historical context that informed the development of these works, and the overall cultural significance and legacy of the exhibition. Albany Institute Free For President’s Day

The Albany Institute of History & Art will offer free admission to the galleries on Monday, February 19, 2018 from 10 am to 5 pm.

Albany Institute Extends Victorian Fashion Exhibit

victorian fashion albany instute exhibitThe Albany Institute of History & Art’s exhibition Well-Dressed in Victorian Albany: 19th Century Fashion from the Albany Institute Collection features over forty dresses from the museum’s collection of Victorian period costumes.

The exhibit opened in October 2017 and has welcomed thousands of visitors to see the rarely displayed dresses. The Institute has announced that the exhibition will be extended, and now run through May 20, 2018. [Read more…] about Albany Institute Extends Victorian Fashion Exhibit

Albany Institute Of History & Art Names New Ed Director

maria vannThe Albany Institute of History & Art has announced Maria Vann as the new Director of Education.

Maria Vann was the former Director/Chief Curator of the Maritime Museum at Battleship Cove. Vann has worked for institutions including the Iroquois Indian Museum, New York State Historical Association, Fenimore Art Museum, and as an adjunct history professor at SUNY College at Oneonta. Uncovering Albany’s Wampum Factory Thursday

Craft Beer Fundraiser Celebrates Erie Canal Bicentennial

hudson valley hopsOn Saturday, April 8 from 4 to 7 pm, the Albany Institute of History & Art will host the sixth annual Hudson Valley Hops. This regional craft beer tasting event is a fundraiser for the museum and is sponsored by the Times UNions’ Table Hopping blog.

It’s an opportunity for the community to sample the flavors of Capital Region craft brewers, see brewing and distilling artifacts from the Albany Institute’s collection, meet industry experts, and receive a commemorative glass. This year, the fundraiser will toast the bicentennial of the groundbreaking of the original Erie Canal with an Irish Red Ale invitational, an IPA contest, music, and more. Exhibit: The African-American Migration Experience

The Albany Institute of History & Art is partnering with the African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region, the Capital District Black Chamber of Commerce, and the JAFJR Community Foundation to host a traveling panel exhibition created and curated by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at The New York Public Library.

This panel exhibition will be displayed in a public space on the third floor atrium of the Albany Institute of History & Art through March 25, 2017. There is no admission fee to see this exhibition. [Read more…] about Exhibit: The African-American Migration Experience

The Art of Seating, an exhibition organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, presents American chair designs from the early nineteenth century to the present day.
