Museum Exhibit Recalls Adirondack Segregation

Fulton Fryar in The Closet prior to its removal from Seagle Music ColonyAdirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, has announced a new acquisition on view in its Life in the Adirondacks exhibition: a cramped, dilapidated shack, known as “The Closet” that for two summers was home to a young and talented African-American tenor, Fulton Fryar.

Through the combined efforts of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the Seagle Music Colony, and Adirondack Experience, this historic artifact was saved from demolition and will help educate museum visitors about the history of racial discrimination in the Adirondack Park. Museum Wins Lake Placid Land Seizure Case

adirondack experience logoOn May 3, 2018, the Appellate Division of New York State’s Supreme Court annulled the Village of Lake Placid’s effort to seize two parcels of land owned by the Adirondack Experience (formerly the Adirondack Museum).

The parcels, located at 2476-2478 Main Street in Lake Placid, were originally acquired by the museum in 2007 for the creation of a branch location, a plan which has since been put on hold. Profile: Adirondack Experience School Programs

adk experience school programAdirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX, formerly the Adirondack Museum) has been offering school programs since 1976. The outreach has expanded exponentially since, now hosting off-and on-site programs free of charge to schools within the Adirondack Park.

In 2017 the Museum; visited over 55 schools in 12 counties; delivered 393 programs to classrooms; drove 10,039 miles to reach students in the ADKS and beyond; engaged with 3,069 students and teachers during field trips to the Museum; and served 8,046 students and teachers in their classrooms. Native American Artists Professional Development Opportunity

adirondack experience logoAdirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, will host a two-day arts business workshop for federally recognized Native artists, to be held in Hogansburg, NY by national Native non-profit Wednesday, November 8 and Thursday, November 9 at Akwesasne Housing Authority Training Center.

Native artists from the area will have the chance to delve into the world of art markets and culturally relevant business strategies. At the two-day training, artists will learn how to market their art, set budgets and pricing structures, develop a business plan, and more. The workshop is a project of the Akwesasne Cultural Center, the Abenaki Cultural Preservation Corporation, and the Adirondack Experience.
