Ballston Spa Village Cemetery Tour July 21

ballston cemeteryOn Saturday July 21 at 11 am, David Fiske is set to lead a walking tour at the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery. During the one-hour tour, participants will view the grave sites of some important industrialists from Ballston Spa’s history, while Fiske tells their stories.

Among the individuals highlighted will be some early industrialists, such as Isaiah Blood and George West. Also included will be more recent business people, notably Donald K. The Life of Anne Northup, Wife of Solomon Northup

anne northupSolomon Northup of Saratoga was lured into slavery in 1841, and was a slave in Louisiana for 12 years before being rescued. What impact did Northup’s kidnapping have on his wife and family? In Solomon’s absence, the Northup family became a one-income household.

Soldier Shows: Broadway and War War One

atta boy soldier storyHistorical researcher David Fiske is set to give a presentation “Broadway Goes to War: Soldier Shows of World War I,” about the “soldier shows” which were staged during and after the First World War, on Sunday, July 14th at 2:30 pm at the Gorham Free Library, 2664 Main Street, Gorham, NY.

Soldier shows were put on to entertain servicemen – in training camps and overseas. However, the shows also allowed theatrical producers to amuse the public. The productions featured performers who were actually in the service, and consisted of humorous skits and novelty songs, which will be revisited during the program. Solomon Northup Class Planned For SUNY Adirondack

Solomon Northup in a Sketch from Twelve Years a SlaveThis October, a class offered through SUNY Adirondack’s Continuing Education division will provide details on the life of Solomon Northup. Northup was a free black man who was kidnapped from Saratoga Springs, New York in 1841, and sold into slavery.

Following his release in 1853, Northup penned a narrative, Twelve Years a Slave, which was the basis for the Academy Award winning film, 12 Years a Slave. Overlook Mountain Could Have Been Television Broadcasting Center

Sunny days will have the parking area, located across from a monastery on Mead Mountain Road in Woodstock, at overflow capacity. The hike to the summit, along a dirt road, is not especially grueling, though hikers can expect to do some heavy breathing as they near the top. Villa Balsamo: A Saratoga County Landmark

Villa BalsamoA man who started in the knitting business in Amsterdam built the lavish structure now known as Villa Balsamo restaurant off Route 50 between Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs.

According to historian David Fiske, Floyd J. Shutts was stymied by Amsterdam officials in 1918 when he tried to add on to his factory on Wall Street. Turned down in Amsterdam, Shutts bought property on Saratoga Avenue in Ballston Spa and opened the Ballston Knitting Company in 1920. [Read more…] about Villa Balsamo: A Saratoga County Landmark

Obstinate Beck JonesThis week’s article was submitted during the summer by David Fiske who passed away on October 28 after a battle with cancer. We publish this story posthumously in his memory.

Rebecca Jones was born in Schoharie County, NY in the 1820s. Her family moved to Ballston Spa, in Saratoga County, where Becky attended a girl’s school. By 1850, she was living in the city of New York and working as a domestic servant for the family of Andrew Gordon Hammersley, a lawyer and banker.
