The Peterboro Women’s History Weekend will be held September 22-24, 2017. The name for this years weekend is taken from a 2016 biography of Elizabeth Smith Miller Ballots, Bloomers, and Marmalade written by Norman K. Dann PhD, biographer of Elizabeth’s father Gerrit Smith.
Miller is most famous for the trouser outfit that she wore to Seneca Falls to visit her cousin Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Stanton introduced Miller to Amelia Bloomer who wrote about the healthy costume in her newspaper The Lily. A program highlighting some of the most innovative activities on the world’s waterways is set to take place September 24-28 at the 2017 World Canals Conference (WCC 2017) in Syracuse.
The Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum in Peterboro NY will be commemorating the New York State Centennial of Women’s Suffrage with a Women’s History Weekend September 22-24, 2017. These two heritage organizations will collaborate with partners for the Ballots, Bloomers, and Marmalade programs that celebrate local history and its connection to the state’s and nation’s history of women’s rights.
The oldest, continually running regional Antiquarian Book Fair in the U.S. will take place in downtown Rochester, NY at the Main Street Armory on Saturday, September 9, from 10 am to 4 pm.

A new book by author Wade A. Lallier, Chenango Canal: The Million Dollar Ditch (Arcadia Publishing, 2017) chronicles the story of a Central New York State canal and how it changed the region. In 1825, the Omnibus Canal Bill had called for a survey of a canal linking the Susquehanna River at Binghamton to the Erie Canal in Utica. The idea of a canal was well received in the Chenango Valley but was opposed by many outside it. 
In honor of the Centennial of New York State Women’s Suffrage, the 25th Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend will feature programs on women during the Civil War. According to the Civil War Trust (March 8, 2016) “women played an instrumental role in the Civil War, both on and off the field” despite the cultural 19th Century norms. “Women left their homes and served as laundresses and nurses for both armies.” “Women also served on the field, cutting off their hair and changing their clothes and names to fight in battle.” “Those women who were not in the field were running farms and businesses that their husbands had left behind – a huge step in the march for independence.” 
The John Brown Lives traveling exhibit Dreaming of Timbuctoo opens Saturday June 10, the first day of the 25th Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend.
The 2017 World Canals Conference (WCC 2017) has announced its key speakers for this year’s event, set to take place September 24-28 in Syracuse. The conference provides a world-class program that highlights some of the most exciting and innovative activities on the world’s waterways. WCC 2017 speakers hail from around the globe, including experts from France, Poland, Scotland, Korea, the U.K., the Netherlands and the U.S. 
The 12th Regiment U.S. Infantry Co. A (reenacting) and the Civil War Heritage Foundation will host the 25th Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend from June 9 to 11. The 12th was first organized in 1798 and disbanded in 1800, raised again in 1812 and for the Mexican War. The regiment portrayed by the reenacting unit was organized by direction of President Lincoln on May 4, 1861. The 12th Infantry is still active.
