E.B. Grandin Print ShopSixteen inches of snow in June. Killing frosts in August. The mystifying weather, known as eighteen-hundred-and-froze-to-death, swept the Northeast in 1816. Unbeknownst to those who suffered from it, the climactic quirk was the result of a volcanic eruption in the distant Dutch East Indies a year earlier.

That summer, Joseph Smith Sr. threw in the towel. The Vermont farmer joined the exodus of his neighbors who were determined to find a life with more promise than they could scratch from the rocky New England hill country. It was rumored that land was more fertile in the western New York State. Men there were already surveying for a canal to connect that country to East Coast markets. Norm Bollen Talks 4th American Revolution Conference

The fourth annual conference takes place from Thursday, June 7 through Sunday, June 10 at various locations including Fulton-Montomery Community College in Johnstown. State Museum Opens Erie Canal Art Exhibit

On display through September 23, 2018, this companion exhibition to the State Museum’s current Enterprising Waters: New York’s Erie Canal looks at the art inspired by the canal and the opportunities it afforded artists, both trained and untrained, working in a variety of media, such as paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, ceramics, and beadwork. Fire Dept History Focus of Schoharie Co Historians Spring Meeting

The Annual Spring Membership Meeting of the Schoharie County Historical Society will be held on Monday, April 30 at the Schoharie Fire Department, located at 114 Fort Road in Schoharie, NY.

The evening will begin with refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the 7 p.m. membership meeting, a program on the history of the Schoharie Fire Department and tours of the new fire house. Citizen Soldier: Rev War Journal of Joseph Bloomfield

citizen soldier bookOn Friday, November 10, 2017, the Fort Plain Museum is holding a book release signing and reception for Citizen Soldier: The Revolutionary War Journal of Joseph Bloomfield, edited by Mark Edward Lender and James Kirby Martin.

Bloomfield was an officer in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment from 1776 to 1779. His service took him from the Mohawk Valley (Guy Park Manor, Johnson Hall, Fort Dayton, Fort Stanwix and others) to Fort Ticonderoga in New York, to the battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania, and to the battle of Monmouth in his native state. Also included are Bloomfield’s notes on the culture and behavior of the Iroquois tribes known collectively as the Six Nations, which played a crucial role in revolutionary New York. Amos Eaton: RPI, Noah and the Erie Canal

The 1820s was known as the diluvial decade. The reference is the search for geological evidence of Noah’s Flood.

The decade was on the cusp of the emergence of geology as a full-blown science in its own right with the publication of Charles Lyell’s Principles of Geology; being an attempt to explain the former changes of the earth’s surface, by reference to causes now in operation (1830-1833). Eventually there would be a new “ology” in colleges as knowledge fractured into the silos that define the modern university with diverse specialties and expertise.
