Sackets Harbor Discussions: After The Civil War

Josh Canale and Dr. John DeansThis autumn, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will continue their readings and discussions series with a “follow up” which takes up where the previous Civil War topic concluded.

Jefferson Community College history instructor Josh Canale will guide the discussions during four Tuesday 7 pm sessions on September 12, 19, 26 and Oct 17. Opening Set For Newly Acquired 1731 Schenectady House

Brouwer HouseThe Schenectady County Historical Society (SCHS) has announced opening plans for the 1731 Brouwer House, its newly acquired Stockade property. The Brouwer House was donated to the SCHS by the Kindl family, who previously resided in the historic home.

On Tuesday, September 26 at 4 pm, SCHS, together with the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at the Brouwer House. Light refreshments and beverages will be served, and tours of the home and garden will be offered.

Rye’s African American Cemetery Preservation Event Sunday

Bell Family On Sunday, September 10th at 5:30 pm, David Thomas, Founder of the Friends of the African American Cemetery, will give a talk about the current efforts to preserve this National Historic Register site in Rye, NY.

The event is co-sponsored by the Jay Heritage Center, and will take place at 210 Boston Post Road, in Rye.

Attendees can learn how ongoing genealogical research is expanding an understanding of the families that are buried there and their place in the narrative of Westchester County’s history. Thomas will link the Purdy family of Harrison and Rye to two generations of an emancipated family at the Jay Estate. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. 1917: An Irish Suffrage Leader Tours America

Hanna Sheehy SkeffingtonThe American Irish Historical Society in New York City and the Irish Amnerican Heritage Museum in Albany will both host a program entitled “A Century of Protest: Hanna Sheehy Skeffington in the US.”

Hanna Sheehy Skeffington was Ireland’s most famous suffragette. When her husband Francis was shot by British firing squad during the Easter Rising, despite his being a pacifist.

Hanna undertook a lecture tour of the US, publicizing what had happened. This autumn her granddaughter, Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, also known for her fight for gender equality and justice, is repeating Hanna’s tour of the US all which will be filmed for a documentary. New Amsterdam in the Dutch Atlantic Event in NYC

Map of New Netherland and New England, with north to the rightOn Monday November 6, 2017, historians Wim Klooster and Dennis J. Maika will present “New Amsterdam In The Dutch Atlantic: A Dialogue About Trade and Entrepreneurship on the 17th Century World Stage.”

The presenters will exchange ideas and perceptions on such topics as the operation of both state-sponsored commercial monopolies and private entrepreneurship, the practical aspects of arranging trade, cooperation as well as competition between representatives of European empires, the impact of “sustained warfare” in the seventeenth century, and finally, the Dutch commercial legacy in both the Atlantic World and New York. Sullivan County: Neversink History Afternoon Sun, Sept 10th

Main Street NeversinkNeversink History Afternoon will be held on Sunday, September 10th from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Time and the Valleys Museum in Grahamsville, Sullivan Caounty, NY.

The Museum’s collection of historical records, photographs, books and artifacts will be available to visitors, bringing to life the history of the Town of Neversink.

The afternoon also includes an exhibit on Town of Neversink maps from the late 1800s, and a program at 2 pm by Charles Barbuti III, “Friends, Family and Fun at the Farm: What Neversink Meant to My Dad,” about life in 1930s Neversink. South Street Seaport Museum 50th Anniversary Celebration

seaport museum 50th anniversaryThe South Street Seaport Museum will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a dockside celebration and benefit at Pier 16 in New York City, featuring cocktails and dinner, on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

The celebration will begin at 6 pm with a VIP cocktail reception in the Captain’s saloon and on the quarterdeck of 1885 sailing ship Wavertree. At 6:30 pm the general admission cocktail reception will begin aboard Wavertree. A dockside dinner featuring catering by Cipriani will be held at 7:30 pm.
