Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Set For February 4-13

2022 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Poster“Doonesbury” cartoonist Garry Trudeau has released his poster design for the 2022 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, which is slated to take place February 4–13, 2022.

Using the Winter Carnival’s designated theme “Totally 80’s,” Trudeau’s illustration shows the “Doonesbury” characters J.J. sitting in the iconic 1980s Delorean time machine from the film Back to the Future, with the date set to February 4th, 2022, while Mike stands outside overlooking the Adirondack mountains. Mirror Lake Water Quality Report Released

Mirror Lake (courtesy Ausable River Association)This week, the Ausable River Association released their fifth annual report on Mirror Lake at Lake Placid in the Adirondacks in partnership with Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute.

The technical brief focuses on data collected throughout the 2020 field season and documents the effects of road salt runoff entering the lake. The lake completed turnover in spring and fall of 2020 after a mild 2019-2020 winter season. This was the first time spring turnover occurred since 2016. First Confirmed EHD Survivor Reported By DEC

NYS first confirmed survivor of EHDDuring the late summer and early fall, an outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) led to the death of a significant number of whitetail deer in parts of New York State.

On Nov. 2, Environmental Conservation Officer Palmateer received information from a Catskill, Greene County, NY family about a youth hunter who shot a buck with bow and arrow a buck that had deformities on its hooves.  The family reported that it looked like the hooves were starting to detach from the deer. 9 Hunters Caught Hunting Bear Illegally In Greene County

Ilegally killed bear seized by ECOs in Greene CountyEnvironmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Palmateer reported he received an anonymous tip in early October about a wounded bear seen near land conservancy property in the town of Greenville, Greene County, during opening weekend of bow season. Knowing this area is closed to hunting and not high density for bears, ECO Palmateer contacted Investigator Sulkey for help surveilling the area. Fort Plain Museum: Author Book Fair, Christmas at the Fort Dec 4th, Dueling Pistols on Display

Fort Plain MuseumThe Fort Plain Museum will be open 10 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays through December. The gift shop will also be open for holiday shopping.
The Christmas at the Fort even will be held Saturday, December 4, 2021, from 10 am to 4 pm.  The event features an Author Book Fair (12 pm to 3 pm) with over 20 authors selling and signiong their books. There will also be 15% off all bookstore and gift shop purchases and refreshments served.

Shelter for the Birds: A Primer

Bird ShelterCome winter, after the bears have retreated to their cold weather dens, many backyard bird enthusiasts hang feeders to attract – and nourish – avian visitors. Birds need more than a supplemental food source, however.

Whether they are roosting, feeding, selecting a nest location, or flying from one grove of trees to another, birds rely on vegetative cover, from the ground level to the treetops. Offering natural sources of cover can help birds evade predators and find protection from inclement weather, as well as provide shelter during migration. Audubon, Raquette River Brewing Partner With On New Beer

Northern New York Audubon and Raquette River Brewing have partnered to create a one-of-a-kind beer. On December 11, 2021 the brand new Spruce Tip IPA will be launched at Raquette River Brewing’s Tupper Lake property.
