New York’s Hops Industry Virtual History Program

hop pickers with a load ready for processingIn the late 1800s Central New York grew eighty percent of the hops in the United States. A number of factors brought a swift end to the industry there around 1920, but that once great industry is now making a comeback.

Madison, Oneida, Otsego, and Schoharie counties led hop production during its “Golden Age.” In 1890, the small independent farms of New York State grew 40,000 acres, and shipped 3 million pounds of hops by canal and railroad, supplying breweries across the United States and around the world.

Heritage Hops Benefit Madison Co Historical Society

Madison County HopsPotted hop plants are available to benefit the Madison County Historical Society in Oneida, NY for at least a five dollar donation. Hop plants are ready to be planted now.

Available hop varieties include Cascade and “Hedgerow Hops” from the wild stock of the old hop yards near Bouckville, NY where commercial hop growing was introduced to Central New York in 1808. 1780 Beer ChallengeOn May 16th, The Middleburgh Library, The Albany Ale Project, and Green Wolf Brewing Company are hosting an afternoon (1 pm to 5 pm) event celebrating beer, brewing, and Middleburgh’s Revolutionary War history.

The day’s activities include a Revolutionary War encampment, colonial brewing and cooking demonstrations, 18th century toys and games for kids, talks on the history of beer and hops in upstate New York and the Schoharie Valley, a Schoharie Valley hops display at the Library, beer samples from Green Wolf and MacKinnon Brothers, and Green Wolf brewery tours. A Tour of Madison County’s Hop Heritage

Drover Hill bed and breakfastThe 2019 Madison County Hop Fest Tour on Sunday, September 15th, will feature exemplary architectural structures that demonstrate the four components of 19th century hop processing, as well as provide new sites of the county’s hop heritage.

Visitors will get to enter the hop houses, see the elements and tools, smell the hop aroma saved in the timbers, and hear the explanations of the processes. The tour will include many “windshield viewings” of other sites included in the 2006 Bicentennial Hop Heritage Trail and in the Cultural Resources Survey supported by a grant from the Preservation League of New York State in 2006.
