On Saturday, September 12, the main street of North Creek in Northern Warren County will be transformed by a celebratory parade commemorating the 125th anniversary of Vice President Theodore Roosevelt’s dramatic ascent to the presidency.
It was on the North Creek Train Depot platform that Roosevelt, after completing a perilous nighttime journey through the Adirondack mountains, received a telegram informing him that President William McKinley had died, making Roosevelt the 26th president of the United States.
The parade, which starts at 2:30 pm at the North Creek Fire Department, will proceed down Main Street and end at the platform where Roosevelt learned the news at 4 pm.
Following the parade, there will be patriotic music, light refreshments, and a retelling of the “Night Ride” by TR reprisor Joe Wiegand. Descendants of the men who drove Roosevelt (and their horses) through the Adirondack mountains at record-breaking speed will also be on hand, along with local dignitaries.
According to North Creek Depot Museum Board President Tony Cucchiara, the parade and program are being sponsored by the 125th Anniversary of the Theodore Roosevelt’s “Night Ride to the Presidency” Planning Committee, which includes representatives from museums, historical societies, cultural institutions, and governments.
The event, he added, is being partially funded by a Town of Johnsburg Occupancy Tax Grant.
“The parade promises to be one of the highlights of our months-long commemoration of this pivotal event in local and national history,” Cucchiara said. “Community organizations, businesses, schools, civic groups, historical societies, veterans’ organizations, musical groups, antique vehicle owners, and individuals are welcome to participate in the parade.”
