In Field Notes from the Northern Forest (North Country Books 2025), Curt Stager draws on scientific literature and on his own observations to share his curiosity about the natural world alongside illustrations by Lake Placid naturalist Anne E. Lacy
With the same humor and personable ease that characterizes the popular weekly nature program that he co-produces on North Country Public Radio (NCPR), these 20 natural science essays take readers to ground level to explore the lives of animals, plants, and fungi commonly encountered in the conifer, hardwood, and mixed wood forests of northeastern North America.
This book “has already gotten me down on my knees to stare at trout lilies, and even to reconsider (slightly) my opinion of black flies,” according to Bill McKibben.
Curt Stager is a professor of biology at Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Sciences in the Adirondacks and author of Deep Future: His writing has appeared in National Geographic, Science, Wild Earth, and Adirondac, among others.
He is also the co-host with Martha Foley of the nationally syndicated public radio program of short conversations on the natural world, Natural Selections. Topics range from evolutionary biology to geology and wildlife, from climate science to animal and human behavior.
Anne E. Lacy is an artist based in the Adirondacks. Her illustrations have appeared in many publications and books, including The Adirondack Wildguide. Her work has also been featured in exhibits of the Smithsonian Institution.
