Last updated in 1999, New York State’s Threatened and Endangered Species List does not currently reflect best available information on the distribution of species or their conservation status.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), over the last 25 years the status of several fish species has improved through restoration efforts; recovered through improved water quality; and declined due to habitat loss and/or climate change.
DEC says this update will ensure full regulatory protection is applied appropriately statewide. The Department is seeking public review and comments on the species status information and proposed protections.

Two virtual public comment hearing sessions will be held by DEC on Thursday, October 10 at 1 pm and 6 pm. For more information and to register, visit the DEC website.
Written comments must be submitted to rarefish@dec.ny.gov (subject: “Endangered Species List”) or to: NYSDEC, Attn: Lisa Holst, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4753. Comments will be accepted until 5:00 pm. October 18, 2024.
Future revisions are planned to address additional species not covered in this rulemaking.
